July 15th ...saw a lone whale a long way off. got breakfast & lowered three boats at 6-45 later lowered fourth boat. struck whale at 12 m. a long way off. he going N.N.E. very slowly. took mates line soon after striking Mr. Crourie bending on. he could not get to whale. finally mate under run line & stopped whale at 3 P.M. got him fluked alongside at 5 P.M… Lat. 16th ...one stmr. spoke us at 8-30 P.M. asking if needed assistance saw our bug light. cut the whale got case bailed & overboard at 6 P.M. (a heavy whale) raised fuier(?) & took jaw. cut around head when a tube gave out plugged it & started steam when another gave out. had to cool off & get inside fire box to turn down end of tubes they being left straight when put in. took in body. raised scalp bone. took in junk (partly) by hand, then having steam finished landing junk & took in case with donkey…
17th ...boiling. Cut up junk & put in casks. put new roughs in one lower cutting block. saw nothing except quite a lot of seaweed & several dolphin. caught two. Mr. Soares came to be treated for chancres tonight.
