Status: Needs Review

Saturday July 8. Last night engaged a tram to take us to “farmon”
this morning, & really I must note it down the man was here as early
as the time set - sunrise - We find as our stay here is lengthened ‘twas
necessary for us to get more things from our place, when the boat will
come we cannot tell. The ride, though early, was hot & while waiting
at the house for the sun to be lower & for the cool of the day, lay down &
slept. Pricilla baked us a hoecake & we bought a watermelon from a woman
so were not hungry. Our ride home was hard, the horse seemed tired or
sick or something & we were obliged to leave him in the road the last
half mile, walk home & send the man back for the tram, he seemed to
understand how to manage for he soon made him trot off at a good pace.
Sunday 9. Very hot. How much we’d like to go to church really we would
attempt the walk if ‘twere not so hot, it would not be safe, but ‘tis a great
temptation. Could do nothing but try & keep comfortable at twilight.
Tilly, who has a room in the basement, and her children came up on the
piazza sang with them heard the little boy say his Catechism for
though he had not been taught to read he had been taught this.

Tuesday 11. Mr. Alden is intending to use this place
for his head quarters as ‘tis nearer the boat landing & on that acc
ount more convenient to draw the rations. Yesterday some of the
Commissary Store began to come he was in and out often, the
rations to the people will be issued from here. This evening
is rather cooler.
