JoNewell; Page 97; This officer was killed on the 6 October 1854 during the 'Great Fire of Gateshead'. He was working the army fire engine following a warehouse explosion and large fire that killed 53 people and injured many more. The fire spread to the surrounding areas and burned for many hours.
