The Committee appointed to ([consult?] on the subject of rebuilding the Gate of Stone, constructing a new fence, enlarging the grounds of the Cemetery, and planting trees.)

respectfully report that they have had the subjects committed to them under consideration & have come to the following conclusions.

First - That it is expedient to construct the entrance gate^ of Mount Auburn with the adjacent porters lodges of hammered granite, of precisely substantially the same form, model and dimensions as the present gate and lodges - that this object can be accomplished within a reasonable time, with out breaking in upon what they deem a desirable ^object the retaining of a fund in the hands of the corporation, which shall be adequate to all the ordinary exigencies of the Institution. They think that contracts may be made for the furnishing the granite, & erecting the gate & lodges within a period of two years from the time when the contracts are made, & that in this manner the prolonged time will enable them the work to be done in a cheaper manner & in a more perfect style. The Committee who suggest that it will be desireable as soon as the gate and lodges are completed ^to begin to erect an iron fence on the whole front line of the grounds [abuttment?] [division?]; & to reviewed with the erection from year to year until the work is completed. ^according to the State of the Funds. They also suggest that on the house [?] it is expedient to plant a live hedge fence of Buck Thorn or some other suitable shrub on the inside of the present fence; believing that in a few years in this way a very handsome & permenant hedge may be thus obtained at a comparatively trifling expense.

Third. The Committee also recommend to purchase, if it can be [received?] upon reasonable terms of ten or twelve acres of land upon ^the western and southwestern side of the grounds at Mount Auburn, contiguous to the present fence, as a suitable enlargement of the grounds, & also as giving a better permanent boundary - upon traversing the canal, they found

it well suited to the purposes as a cemetery.

Fourth. The Committee also recommend the adaption of the recent plan of Mr. Waloo Higgenson of laying out the lots at the north^South eastern part of Mount Auburn, & to have a suitable num ber of trees planted and seeds sown there to ensure a good growth of forest trees in the [?] of a moderate number of years.

Fifthly. The Committee also recommend that the sum of Two. hundred Dollars be placed, under the control of the Cemetery Committee ^on Lots to be by which expended on the planting of forest trees of different kinds in more parts of the grounds, where they are wanted, & that they have authority to import the same forest trees from abroad.
