Cushman, Charlotte

(July 23, 1816 – February 18, 1876) Charlotte Saunders Cushman was an American stage actress. Her voice was noted for its full contralto register, and she was able to play both male and female parts. She lived intermittently in Rome, in an expatriate colony of prominent artists and sculptors, some of whom became part of her tempestuous private life. Cushman was also a large proponent of [[Lewis, Edmonia|Edmonia Lewis's]] artistic career. [[Hosmer, Harriet|Harriet Hosmer]], Matilda Hays, and Emma Stebbins are notable lovers of her. Cushman's and her partners are often used as examples of "Boston Marriages," a reference to her LGBTQ+ relationships. Cushman chose a large obelisk to be her memorial at Mount Auburn in [[Lot 4236]] on [[Palm Avenue]].
