Description

(1847-1884) Worker, Gardener, and Gatekeeper Pro tem of Mount Auburn Cemetery in 1870-1871. He was the son of Truman H Safford, the Gatekeeper at Mount Auburn from 1857-1876. At the age of 10, Fred would have likely lived on the grounds of the Cemetery with his father. In the late 1860s during his adolescence, Fred began to do tasks for the Secretary, Superintendent, and Gatekeeper.

In 1872 Frederick Safford would go on to be the Superintendent of Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, MA for twelve years before his death.
