Mount Auburn
To the gentlemen, trustees of the Mount Auburn Cemetery. At the request of one of your members I submit the following description of Lots no 37 and 290 Chestnut Avenue, owned by N.G. Carnes and Francis Carnes, laid out and enclosed as one lot containing six hundred square feet with an arbor Vitae hedge, granite gate posts and sill, heavy ornamental cast iron gate bronzed.
In the centre of lot is a cast iron monument weighing about three tons, set upon a firm hammered granite base in the best manner for durability.
The location and grade of the lots are such as to render the future expense (small, compared with many others in the grounds) to keep them in order from year to year.
The borders around the lots are well supplyed with good ornamental trees and shrubs of a durable nature.
Lot no 1917 Sorrel Path, taken by John W. Edmands, has been transfered to a gentleman by the name of Hook, this lot contained six hundred square feet, and Mr Hook purchased it, with the understanding that his brother in law Frederick Clapp should have half of it; Mr Clapp feels very desirous of sustaining the same relations to the corporation that Mr Hook does as regards privileges, I therefore, at his request, put the question, to the trustees, whether they will allow Mr Clapp to pay twenty dollars, and receive an admission ticket to the grounds as a proprietor
Very respectfully your servant Rufus Howe Supt
