To the Trustees of Mount AUburn Cemetery

Gentlemen,

I take the liberty to address a few lines to you in regard to the interests of Mount Auburn.

The two past seasons has convinced me of the real necessity of a suitable Barn for the place so far as neatness & economy are concerned, I percieve [sic] by the Books that there has been several tons of hay purchased from year to year untill [sic] the present. in future there need be none had we a suitable Barn to put it in. The hay is cut in small quantities & at Various times in consequence more or less of it is lost. Our carts &c are out in all weather for want of a place to house them, would it not be economy to have a Barn? I am convinced from past experience that the whole expense would be saved in three years.

The present gate way can be retained for $100 one of the Lodges might be Very useful, one sold, & the remaining timber & Boards go toward Building a Barn.

The gate Keeper requests me to say that he feels that his wages are insufficient considering his circumstances & his confinement at the gate.

Respectfully your Servt. Rufus Howe

Mount Auburn Feb 6th 1843.
