To the Supt. Mt. Auburn Cemetery
Sir
A few days ago I looked at the lot of the Scots Charitable Society, my attention having been particularly called to it at this time from your letter in regard to the necessity of fixing the [tomb?]; and it seemed to me that the surface of the ground was in rather bad shape generally; and as if the grass had not been cut for a long time. I have by this mail sent a note to Mr Maitland in regard to this subject, and so can confer with him in regard to the whole matter. Or if I knew what afternoon I could see you I would come out. Dear Sir,
I have rec^d^, by your politeness, thro. Mr [Fra..?] of our Mount Hope Cemetery Corp^n^, a copy of the By-Laws and the Rules & Regulations of Mount Auburn Cemetery --
The Proprietors of our cemetery Grounds are about revising their By-Laws, more particularly in regard to doing the labor for individual lots --
I notice by Article 9, of your Rules & Regulations it implies that all labor either for general purposes or for individual lots is done by the Corporation, and I suppose, however, that done on individual lots is at the expense of & is paid by the owner of the lot, or is the owner permitted to enter the grounds & do his own work, or by hands employed by him?
I would be much obliged if you will be so kind as to give me the desired information --
Very Truly yrs.

If you have used it up it is of no consequene; but as the team was over that way on another errand, I thought they could bring back a load. Any expense will be paid by bearer Yours [Respy] F.M. My dear Sir,
In regard to the Swans tc. at Mt. Auburn will you have the kindiness to give me all estimates (which if you have already, I believe) of their yearly cost. also let me know whether they commit appreciable damage, whether they are generally considered as adding to the beauty of the grounds, the probable cost of a new female swan, +whether at present other geese or ducks are needed in case it is determined to retain the. I see no mention of birds in the report of Greenwood.

Letter: H. W. Warren to Superintendent, 1882 "missing cane" (page 1)
Jamaica Plain. Mass. July 21/82 Friday
Dear SirThis afternoon--after visiting out lot (corner Spruce & Fir Ave's)--I went with some children to the top of the tower, and left my cane hanging to the railing on the top. It was a dark brown cane with common curving handle; and my name was once plainly cut near the handle, but it may have been worn smooth by this time. I value the cane as an old and very useful companion; and if you have had it left in your charge by the finder, I shall be very glad to get it again.
Letter: H. W. Warren to Superintendent, 1882 "missing cane" page 2
If you find any trace of it will you kindly have it sent to the Mt. Auburn [carat: Treasurer's] Office in Boston and I will call for it. I enclose postal card to my address--on which I shall be obliged if yo will reply, & state whether you have any tiding of the missing article--Yours etc H.W. Warren. Box 33. Jamaica Plain Mass.
