Mr dear Willie

Thine of the 10th inst. arrived today - I am grieved to learn that thee does not get our letters more directly - Ann has been at home 4 weeks to-day - she has written twice & I have twice also since then - & Mary I think has also written - but thee will have to excuse her now as she has been quite confined to her bed for the last week - has over worked & brought on her old troubles - she is a poor suffering child - having quite too much ambition for her strength. Melissa has been not as well as common all summer & Mary of course did more to favor her - & just as she was getting smart her sisters tumbled out of the waggon & one of them was so hurt that M. had to go home - they had a [Gale?] girl from

Plainfield one week, & [Ridder?] girl from [ds?] who can stay two - & we have a little hope that Melissa will come back next week - Horace & John Putnam have gone to the centre to a war meeting & others are passing - H. says Mary is no better - He is out recruiting again & wants to go himself - Denisen Ormsbe & the Pain boys have returned - say they were sick. Josiah Town wrote home that when the Rebels threw the shell among them, they scattered like young partridges - [underline]that[/underline] was not included in the $50 a month - Caleb O. & David F. have $75 - I hear - & I do not know but some of the rest do - Horace got thy letter & Mary thought he would answer it right off - & I do not know - but he has - but guess he is too busy - I think I will direct this only to the hospital, without adding the co. & Reg. & see if thee gets it any more direct - Ann wrote to Henry when she did to thee, the first time after she came home & he answered it very soon - Thy mother R. B. S.
