Camp 4th Vermont Inf.
September 1st 1864
Charlestown Va.

Respected Friend
Rachel B. Stevens

Your communication of August
18th came to hand soon after it was written but on account
of being constantly on the march I have been unable to ans-
wer it untill this day. We are now camped near Charlestown.
How long we may remain here I am unable to say but I sin-
cerely hope it may be long enough so that the 6th Corps may
have a little rest which we so badly need:

Regarding Williams accounts I cannot find that he had any
here: I have seen Lieut. Hatch who does not claim to be oweing
William any thing: do not know how Capt. Galt & William stood.
I do not know where the Captain is now if I did I would see
him and ascertain. The things which I have in my valise
I will keep safely & send to you by Express if you wish when
I arrive at Brattleboro which will be between the 20th and
25th of this month I expect: - Truly as you say a visit to
Montpelier would be sad compared to the one I had anticipated
yet should I have time this fall I should be pleased to make a
visit to Montpelier and, although [underline]he[/underline] has gone, to call on the Mother
Brothers & Sisters of him who was one of my warmest and
most intimate friends: -
