Battle Ground of Cave Springs Oct 10th 1862
Dear Wife I have a chance to send my
letters now and I will improve it. We have
had a big battle of which you will not doubt hear
before this reaches you. Our Regiment has suffered
very much, from 150 to 200 killed & wounded but
Capt Waltons company suffered but little. no one
hurt that I am acquainted with Major Kilgore
was badly wounded and we learn has died this
morning. We were five miles in the rear, at the
time of battle, we were not allowed to leave but
at night we came down and rationed the boys,
the next morning I got permission to come down
to the hospitals, and it was an awful sight
the boys lay there, shot in all manner of
