information-about-overseas-service: On being assigned to the Navajo in the Pacific Area, his ship sailed from the west coast on July 13 1943. Just before reaching their destination at advanced base, she was struck by an enemy torpedo, near midnight of September 13th. It was a heavy explosion, and a small sip, so she sank rapidly - in less than two minutes. Four of the officers aboard were lost. George East was Communications Officer and assistant Navigator on his ship.
Boatwain Sam C. Reid, a survivor of the Navajo's crew supplied information
