90. SEED CATALOGUE AND GARDEN GUIDE.

[image] FESTIVA MAXIMA PAEONY

PAEONIES. EVERYONE know the old-fashioned red "Piny" of our grandmother's garden--but the specialists of America, Europe, and particularly those of Japan, have been at work so that there are now more than one thousand named varieties, many of them of the most curiously beautiful shapes, and colors. It is truly a noble flower, rivaling the rose in brilliancy of color and prefection [perfection] of bloom, while greatly surpassing it in size and stately grandeur. One writer has well said: "The paeony fully equals the rose, except in poetry, perfume, thorns, bugs, and disease." They are as hardy as an oak, requiring no protection even in the severest climate. They are of the easiest culture, most vigorous habit, and free from all disease and insects. The foliage is rich, glossy and ornamental even when plants are not in bloom. Many of the newer varieties are quite fragrant and no other flower is so well adapted for large, showy bouquets, the blooms selling readily in Chicago and other large eastern cities for ten dollars a hundred and the supply does not equal the demand. We have acres of paeonies including a vast number of sorts, but name only a few of the most popular and offer the others in mixture. Festiva Maxima.--This variety is by far the finest double white paeony grown. The flower is of immense size, perfectly globular, the guard petals being large, while the inner petals are crimped, thus making it appear extremely double. The color is of the purest snow white with sometimes slight carmine marks in the center. Usually sell at $1.00 each, but we offer it at only 75c, dozen $8.00. Victoria Tricolor.--Has a very large full flower. The outer petals pale rose mottled with pink; center yellowish white. Each 25c, doz. $2.50. La Esperance.--An exceedingly fine vivid rose colored flower, growing compact and highly perfumed, early, free flowering. Each 35c, doz. $3.50. Andre Lauries.--A very double flower of deep bright red that blooms till late in the season. Each 25c, doz. $2.50. Grandiflora Rubra.--Extra large perfect balls of pure blood red, magnificent flowers. Probably the largest red variety in existence, often eight or nine inches across, and so double as to appear like perfect balls. Give it rich soil and you will be surprised. Each 50c, dozen $4.75. Double White.--Large size double flowers which appear to be pure white on the bush, but when placed beside Festiva Maxima show a slight creamy tint. It is about as pure white, however, as any other double white and is a free bloomer. Ea. 50c, doz. $4.00. Rubra Triumphans--An early blooming, very sweet scented flower of rich, brilliant, glowing, satiny crimson color. Each 25c, dozen $2.00.

Golden Harvest.--It is probably the nearest approach to a yellow Paeony. A very sweet and showy flower. Each 60c, doz. $5.50. Marie Lemoine.--A very lovely large silky flower; white shaded with soft delicate flesh color. Full double, a good bloomer, fragrant. Each 40c, dozen $3.50. Medium Pink.--A very extra fine, large flower of handsome, bright pink color. Blooms freely. Each 25c, doz. $2.50. Ruth.--An especially choice sort. TRITOMA.--Pfitzeri--Sometimes known as Flaming Torch or Red Hot Poker Plant. At floral exhibitions and when sent as cut-flowers to market, this plant attracts great attention. It grows from 3 to 4 feet high, the flower measuring 12 to 15 inches long. They are of dazzling scralet [scarlet], lower half of flower tinged with rich orange. Each 20c, 3 for 50c.

ICELAND POPPY.--Fern-like foliage and bear an immense number of elegant flowers. Hardy. Each 15c, doz. $1.25.

[image] SWANLEY WHITE VIOLET.

VIOLETS.--Of all perfumes that of violets is no doubt the most delicate and pleasant and easily places these modest little blue flowers among our greatest favorites. Violets grow and bloom freely if given a cool situation, but will not succeed in a warm place, and should be well covered to insure [ensure] their protection during the winter months. Swanley White.--Unquestionably the finest double variety in existance [existence] and is a decided acquisition.
