Office of Indian Affairs San Francisco Cal Jan 16th 1865

Sir

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 14th Dec 1864 granting authority to purchase clothing in event of its being deemed necessary, and requesting me to forward an estimate for the clothing and other goods required this year as soon as possible. In conformity with the request, I enclose herewith an estimate of an amount which I consider to be indispensable to the service. A much larger supply would be necessary to provide well for all the Indians in the state but I have estimated for as large an amount as I consider the appropriation will justify. They will be comparatively comfortable the coming year as a portion of the last shipment will remain in their possesion.

I have apportioned the supply to the four reservations under my charge and respectfully request that it be put up separately thereby saving much labor and re packing and consequent delay. I wish the goods all invoiced to me but so marked as to designate the packages for each reservation.

preferable to white. The pants should be of some durable material. If any other cloth is cheaper in proportion to the durability than [satinette?] it should supply its place. The small sized woolen shirts are designed for the children, many of whom are entirely destitute of clothing.

I have included a small amount of hardware (all of which will be required) thinking that something might be saved to the [Govt?] by purchasing in New York unless I am unabled to purchase here for cash. The hoes we require are the ordinary garden hoe, the knives, a common serviceable article. The best quality of sickles are required, as we have large crops of grain to harvest.

I urge the purchase and shipment of these goods at the earliest practicable day that they may arrive here in time to reach the Indians before winter sets in.

Yours Respectfully Your Obt Servant Austin Wiley Supt. Ind. Affs. Cal
