Yuba City Cal, Oct 13th 1863

Hon Wm P. Dole

Sir You will see by my last a/c current & monthly statement for Aug. that the U.S. is behind some $9501.17/100

This amount is virtually due to others and not myself, (as I informed you in my letter 8th Sep. last concerning Hamblen & the cattle purchased from him.

Also in like manner I am now made responsible to supervisors Bryson & Melendy & 6 or 7 Laborers for over $3,000 besides 2 horses some wheat corn fencing &c in Round Valley for which I took vouchers & give them checks for the the amt. thereof which checks they were to withhold until I informed them of the arrival of the anticipated draft from Washington (which has now come to my Successor) Mr Bryson & 4 employees under him withheld their checks, for the purpose of useing the money in the purchase of 19 mares & colts for Smith River Res. This was on a former deposit. In, all there is due employees & others about the above sum of $9,500

Now Mr Hamblen has come upon me

for his money for that check (over $4,200) for the first lot of 220 head delivered. well I had no money, and hence rain stared one or both of us in the face; and as temporary relief, I have this day turned him over at cost, the balance of the goods not shipped to the Reservation; he took them at cost, & sent them to the mines to cash. Although he could purchase the same goods in San Francisco from 10 to 20 per ct cheaper.

Of course I will be bound to the department for them, and after the certificate of issue of those sent to Round Valley, Mendocino & Smith River & the Rec't for the bal, from my successor is obtained, I will forward the sum & be charged with the balance which will thereby appear.

I regret this course, but the necessity will plead the excuse.

I will [authorize?] Mr. Cole member of Congress to settle with you if he has time, Otherwise you must send me money for expenses & I will go myself.

The person to whom money is due are much in want of it.

Hoping all will be very satisfactory.

I have the honor to be your obt sert G. M. Hanson Late Suptg Agt &c
