Treasury Department Second Auditor's Office June 18 1863

Sir, The claims of L.G. Hughes, $1376.61, James R. Jones $230.99 & Lewis Leach $1091.07 for supplies furnished to the Indian Dept in Califa, received from your office 11 & 15th inst respectively, are herewith respectfully returned.

Such portions of these claims, as are directed to be paid to the claimants, and charged to M. B. Lewis late Sub Agent, who has heretofore received credit for their amount, on the settlement of his a/cs, cannot now be charged to Mr Lewis, the claimants must look to him, their receipts are perfect, and the UStates have paid the amount by giving

Mr Lewis a credit - see opinion of the Atty Genl viz 23 Novr 1854 - Vol. 7 - Page 40 opinions Attys General.

In regard to those vouchers susp'd in the c/s of M B Lewis for various reasons and for which he claims credit by his a/c currt & abstracts, he should file a statement setting forth he did not pay them - is not entitled to credit for them and that their amounts are unpaid, and due to the different parties.

Remarks made in the Office of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, upon the claim of L G Hughes contained in a certificate of late Sub Agent Lewis, enclosed in a letter to this office, dated at Millerton Cal'a May 1st 1863, being vouchers 1.2.3.4, in 3rd q'r 1859; 1 & 2, in 4th q'r 1859; 1 & 2 in 1st q'r 1860; 1 & 2 in 3rd q'r 1860, and 4 in 4th q'r 1860 amounting to [blank] $ [blank] in M B Lewis's acct's 3rd & 4th qr's '59, & 1st 3rd & 4th qr's '60; viz:

By reference to the Statement of Differences of M B Lewis' acct's, dated 17th November 1862, it will be found that voucher 2 of 3rd qr '59, $175.37 " 3 " do 381.95 and " 4 " do 95.32 of LG Hughes amounting to 652.64, were suspended because of their not being receipted, nor certified by Sub Agent. The certificate of M B Lewis enclosed is sufficient to remove said suspension, and the amount of said vouchers should be paid to L G Hughes, Millerton, Fresno County, California.

As to voucher 1 of 3rd q'r 1859 of LG Hughes $300. " 1 " 4th " " , " do. 194.84 ". 2 " " " ", " do. 175.71 370.55 " 1 " 1st " 1860, " do. 267.79 670.53 " 2 " " " ", " do. 133.69 401.48 " 1 " 3rd " ", " do. 32.05 " 2 " " " ", " do. 139.39 171.44 " 4 " 4th " " , " do. 151.05 723.92 Amounting to $1394.52
