Thomas T. Sloan letter collection

Collection consists of twenty-eight (28) letters from Bridgett Sloan, of Lexington, Kentucky, to her son Thomas T. Sloan, ranging from 1832-1848 (there are no letters from 1836-1842). From 1832-1834 T. Sloan resided in Washington D.C. In 1834-1835 T. Sloan joined the Marine Corps and moved to New York City and would go on to spend time in Georgia, Baltimore, Cape Verde, and France. The letters are filled with motherly advice and details of B. Sloan's family and everday life in Lexington. B. Sloan often chastises her son for not writing enough and lack of faith. In a few letters B. Sloan writes about scarlet fever afflicting people in her area and also mentions the Cholera outbreak circa 1832-1833. her son about the dangers of Cholera. Also included is a letter from Mary Minerva Harbison of Cape Girardeau, Missouri to "Dora" which was dated 1857. The letter regards daily life and asking Dora to visit.
