Lexington Oct. 4th 1848

My dear son

Two days since I received two letters from you, one dated 22d June, Messina. The other is from Leghorn July 9th. I am happy to learn that there is some prospect of your return to America this winter. You say if you do you think you will not come to the west untill spring. There is nothing earthly I desire so much as to see you, but, not at the expence of your health. if you think that there will ge any danger of the climet disagreeing with you do not come untill hte cold season is past. It is strange though that this region of country would be more trying to your constitution than New York, you know best on that subject, and we know we want to see you as soon as posible. The children speak of your arival daily, there is nothing animates them so much as to speak of your coming home. When we hear you are landed on your native shore we will then return many thanks to that great and mighty being who has preserved your life in many dangers for years and years . Even little Anna is deligthed at the idea of your being home soon. When we ask her wher is uncle Dove she will say "on the sea." If we ask her where your picture is she will tell us it is in the parlour. Theodora is still anxious to see you, to see what you look like. She thinks you must be something more than common as she has to pray for you morning and night. I have the painful task to tell you that Mr. Christy is no more, he died on the 26th of August last. His illness was short but very painfull, it was the yellow jandess [jaundice] he had. He joined

The song of Temperance last spring, but his constitution was gonit was too late to save his life, he lived a few months longer than he would if he had not quit drink and then it was a satisfcation to know he died a sober man. Poor man, I do not think he was aware of the apprach of death so soon although he appeared some alarmed at his situation he asked for a minister. Mag. sent Robert in the night for Father McMahon who baptized him and anointed him for death. He was interned in the Catholic cementry close by our relatives. I do not know what Margaretta will do, she is not calculated to be left alone. She will get eleven hundred and fifty dollars from the old man Christy, estate but all will not support her in her extravagents. it is a great misfortune for her family that she knows nothing of economy, she has lost more friend, on that account than act of her life, It is yet uncertain what she will do, she speaks of goin -g to Madisonville to spend the winter and take all her children Simeon will leave her next month for Philadelphia where he will live, he is a pardenor in one of the oldest holesale houses of that place, I have forgoten the name. however, you can find him when you are there, He wishes you to do so. Court is now in session and Fayett Shelby is missing, his father dies last month so his estate stands Ten thousand dollars. The oth -er scamp Doil. is to be tryed this term I give you the nature of his case in my last. He is the son of Mrs Huggins by her first husband, Mr Silkertonyou know the family Miss Susan Cook is on a visit their, she will be one of the chief cooks you know, I know it makes you think of old times to see her name. Elizabeth, Robert and Sarah will atten. A son of Elizabeth Prices spent a night with us last weeke. He is very much pleased will Josephene and Laura, but unfortunat he is not bothered with too much smartness. We have a Miss Maggrett Morton spending a few weeks with us, I am induced to believe tha there is a fatality that all of the nane cannot marry with-out difficulty. She was ingaged to a gentelman and the day fixed for their wedding then her relations all were determined he should not have her after allowing him to be a daily visitor and her constant galant for months, her brother Henry run her up hear to stay untill her sister Mrs Cox goes to NewOrleans which will be in a short time. I have not learnt their objection to the gentleman, she dose not tell it I do not know that every one has asked, she has told Sarah and she will tell me when she is gon. I have not heared from my friend MrsReynolds for some time she owes me a letter. I should like to hear from them since peace. I have only four of them in my room consu lting how Sarahs hair shall be dressed, well Mrs Morton has desided it now here goes the perfume oil, and now the planting is going on. I will be glad when they are off. I have not heared from Missouri for a long time on Madisonville either.
