about the middle ofthe day the eneny comenced flanking on our left owing to their Superior numbers we were unable to protect or flanks as well as they should be. though our troops fought Galliantly untill late in the evening when finding they were completely flanked by the Enemy they gave away & comenced retreating in good order. The Enemy Seeing that advantage already gained following it up briskley. & I regret to say caused our forces to retreat through whinchester in great confusion & disorder. The Yanks followed our retreating army Some distance up the Valley. I regret here to have to record the death of the Galliantly & dashing Major Gen Rhodes
