Dear Mr. Lennon,

I am writing for your assistance in a project I am currently involved in. It is a new organization called the Southern Election Fund, Inc.

Its purpose is to give financial assistance to white and black candidates for public office in the Southeastern part of the United States.

In this country, there exist several organizations that will financially support candidates for our national congress; there is none - with the exception of our group - that will support candidates for town councils or county commissions or county sheriffs, or state legislatures. Quite naturally, campaigns for federal office receive more attention, and therefore more aid.

We are attempting to accomplish two purposes: one, to elect to public office decent men and women who will represent the unrepresented peoples of this region, and, two, to help build political movements that will eventually constitute a strong, mass-based democratic movement against war, racism and poverty.

I am enclosing a brochure from the Southern Elections Fund, as well as a booklet of interviews with Southern political candidates which you may find interesting.

I hope you can find some way to be of assistance to us.

Peace,

Julian Bond
