Dear Jimmy,
Thanks for your letter. It is good to hear from you. It is
hard for me to schedule dates in the period January through
June, because our legislature meets through March and we are
threatened with a special session after that.
Is it at all possible for me to arrange something sooner, perhaps
in February during Negro History week. The legislative load is
not so heavy then as it might be in May.
In other words, if I say "yes" to the date in May, I may have
to say "no" just the day before.
Write back with an alternative date, and see if something can
be worked out.
You ought to think about inviting a native son, John Lewis, who
not only has the virtue of being a local boy who has made good,
but who is a preacher too.
Sincerely,
Julian Bond
