Now Iamblichus says he was 22 years in Egypt.
That could not possibly hav ebeen if he went anywhere else; and besides his philosophy shows few or no trace of Egyption influence but money and strong traces of Indian influence. We cannot then accept the 22 years as having been spent in Egypt.
But we may suppose that the truth was that his travels occupied 18 years say from 553 B.C. to 531 B.C.
This africes accurately with our first date; for fractions could easily account for the apparent discrepancy of one year.
But this is not all.
Cyrus had not taken Babylon in 546 B.C.
Pythagoras therefore would not ahve been carried to Babylon at all; and this fits in with the fact that his philosophy shows not the smallest trace of Babylonian influence.
