About
Sales of public land by the United States Government in Indiana began in 1801. Sales at the Jeffersonville Land Office began in 1808. This receipt book from the Jeffersonville Land Office gives the name and residence of the purchaser, the dates of the purchase, the legal description of the tract purchased, the amount of land, the receipt number, and the price. Similar information is available in the federal Bureau of Land Management's Land Patent Database; however, the date of purchase given in the receipt book is often earlier than the date the land patent was issued. Using this database can be helpful to identify difficult-to-read names.
Each page will be indexed like a spreadsheet. Once you begin indexing, please see the transcription instructions directly under the entry or on the Help tab. Many users find that it is easier to index one column at a time, rather than going across the page in rows. The arrow keys on your keyboard will allow you to advance to the next field, and the Enter key will move you to the next line. You can also change the layout so that the page appears above or next to the transcription fields.
