Account Book of John Mills, 1775-1785 (Folios 1-126)

John Mills was a merchant residing in Alexandria, Virginia. This ledger comprises transactions that occurred between 1775 and Mills's death in 1784; at least 2 different authors created the ledger based on the handwriting found within it. Accounts include both men and women and connections Mills had with individuals in London; King George County, Loudoun County, and Fairfax County, Virginia; and Maryland. The accounts are grouped in alphabetical order by geographic location.

Mills built his home on Shuter's Hill, the present day location of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial; the ledger details the purchase of the land in 1779 for 389 pounds and carries through its construction detailing the purchase of bricks and the enslaved labor used to construct it.

This ledger includes 485 accounts across 274 folios, plus 4 additional folios detailing summary transactions from other ledger and memorandum books. This Work contains folios 1 to 126.
