Transcription Conventions

  • Pages are divided into sections by date; insert and repeat the account information, the type of transaction, and the currency qualifiers for each row, as appropriate. When the shopper is not the account holder, include the information with the Entry.
  • Spelling: Transcribe spelling exactly as it appears, including misspellings and abbreviations. Insert the modern spelling or abbreviated word in square [ ] brackets immediately after, e.g. ozenbgs [osnaburg] or yds [yards].
  • Capitalization: Retain original capitalization.
  • Punctuation: Use original punctuation. Insert a semicolon between items in the Entry field.
  • Illegible Text: If characters in a word are difficult to read, make a guess and put a note in the Comments field. Use dot leaders when only a few letters can be determined: ...bgs.
  • Fractions: For fractions found in money or measurements, convert them to decimals. When the fraction occurs in the measurement of a liquid, i.e. rum, transcribe it in words in square [ ] brackets. E.g. 1/4 Rum = 1/4 [1 quart] Rum, 2/4 Rum = 2/4 [2 quarts] Rum, 3/4 Rum = 3/4 [3 quarts] Rum.
  • Strikethrough: If legible, include the word with html formatting around it: <strike>text</strike>.
  • Ditto: When encountering Ditto, Do, or Dtto, insert what is represented by the repeat into square brackets. E.g. To 1 youth's felt [hat] 2/: 1 Do [felt hat] 2/6
  • Multiple Items in a Single Entry: To distinguish between items described in a a single entry, insert a semicolon between them. E.g. To 1 youth's felt [hat] 2/: ; 1 Do [Felt hat] 2/6
