Pennfield NC March 17th 1871

Mr. J. J. Welch

Dear Son I embrace this pleasant Morning of writing you a few lines. We are all better than when you left Sue is better Lizzie and the babe are well, Mother is better; and I am improveing Slowly I would feel greatly improved; but my throat keeps sore and my voice is still broken and difficult to talk; I want to go to Charlotte next week and I shall have to take Mother with me I keep so weak and so difficult for me to swallow and I am so much bothered about eating; We have had a most pleasant week dry and nice for Business it is warm and some Cloudy to day; The boys have been carrying on finely since you left prepareing the new ground Hauling out Manure and sowing Oats; there is no news of importance; Uncle And[rew] Gamble was buried last Sunday at Sandy Ridge he made a will and left Fipps and Elij Teague Executors I dont think Bob will get anything More; He wants to sell over

His place and buy Out Wash Charles Wash is in a great fever to go to the Missouri Jane Brown has a Sale next Monday the 20th to go out to the Mo; produce keeps about the same it was when you left it is rather on the upward Tendency Flour Corn and Bacon; I have not heard how Bell & Co are progressing with their tobacco Factory; Cotton is rather looking up, Blackberries and dried fruit are both improveing Wheat is taking a nice start the Peach Blooms are all coming out into full Bloom; The Neighbors are busily engaged on their farms sowing Oats Carrying on their farms We have planted some Potatoes and made a right smart start gardning Tom. has his old Mare yet talks of selling her to Bob Bratain for a bull in part pay and corn in the fall for the balance.

Bill Welborn killed a Bull last week that come to $56.00 he was here last Sunday Have not heard from Uncle Wm Welches for some days [Lizzie?] wants to go there as soon as she can get a horse Affectionately S. J. Piggott
