Respected Daughters

A happy New Year to yourselves - Teacher and your associates - We have rcd Susan's letter of I think the 17 ult -- or rather we have rcd two posts from her & none from Guelma - there was one last week in the offce from Phil for Mary Ann McLean & one [before??] I have nothing new to say to you only that we have now 4 P. M. just got through with eating not Turkey but Goose a good one it was prepared by Hannah in most elegant style -- the little company that destroyed it consisted of no one except the every day inmates of the old store - this number however was complete -- even Merritt occupied his corner of the table and picked his share of the carcass -- I should have had just a piece for you had you been on the spot

Dear Sisters

I have nothing in particular to write Father says he has commenced this letter and says that Mother and I must finish it. He has given you a history of the most important matters So that we shall have an easy task to write the rest.

Mary Stout is teaching school at the same place when She taught last summer & Harriet goes about making wedding cloaks. The last she made was for Caroline Cole who is going to be married (so report says) to Ancon Collins this winter (two fools met). Grandfather & Grandmother continue about as they have been. The rest of us are able to eat our share of the Goose--Daniel has not returned from the west yet. Our folks talk some of going out after him. Almira Howe is not coming to teach our school as we expected. Ira Howe and Emeline Read are both maried to somebody. Mrs Burdick continues along about about as she was when Susan left home. R Carter has not recovered yet but is able to sit up and ride out some -Esq. McLean's folks had a large party a week ago last Friday Evening. There was a good many folks there but I dont know any of the particulars. Aaron wont tell any thing about it only that it was first rate ----There was great sleigh rides on Christmas. The common folks went to Woodworths in Salem and had an oyster supper & dance in the Evening. Such as Dewitt & M. and McLean Clapps folks, Fords, & Coles, & Bishops & Collins &c&c went to Salem Aby McFarland also. -- But the upper crust went to Union Village, and had an oyster supper & fair

Such as Esq. McLeans Girls, Sophia Fitch, H Stout, Henry && Ann McLean Esq. & [??] Docter Collins went to the villiage

I expect they had a high scrape for Aaron looked the next 2 or 3 days, as tho he had been shot through a wood pile, and his appetite was vey poor &c --

The Ladies of this vicinity have formed a society called the "Ladies benevolent working Society" They meet twice a fortnight to knit, sew, tell stories, &c &c. The object is to raise funds for some charitable purpose. Such for instance as to paint the inside of the meeting ?? house or to send somebody off a mishonarying -- their next meeting is at McLean's tomorrow evening

It is now past 11 oclock and all our folks have been to bed an hour, or more ---

Cynthia is about as she has been for some time past

Eliza has gone to Adams. ["Our"??] is cultivating a very fine pair of Mustaches. They have got to be very long & black and are a wonderful addition to the personal appearance of the [Great??]. You would not know him I dare say if you should happen to meet him unexpectedly away from house. You must not let him know that I have said any thing about his whispers for I am afraid he would take it in high dudgeon --

Hannah

Aunt Hannah talks of nameing her babe Hannah Cammelia

Dear Girls,

Your long wished for letter or that of Susan's has this moment been rcd and carefully perused over & over again and has now gone to the house by Danl R. for the inmates thereof to examine & reexaine for themselves -- I am thankfull to learn that you enjoy good health yourselves & from your silence upon the subject of the health of your little family suppose that all are equally favored-No new occurrence has taken place here since my last which was mailed in Arlington VT -- Your Mother is -afflicted not as much with her constitutional dificulty in respiration as hertofore

Your Grand Parents are also quite as well & Grand Par considerably better than two weeks ago----

Your Brothers & Sisters now all go to the district school leaving none in the house during the day as constant inmates but the three -- you have or will most likely ere this reaches you have heard of the shocking outrage committed by the Cannadian armed forces upon the Steamboat Caroline and her Passengers while lying at a small place near Buffalo--For this Brutal Butchery of human life & destruction of property no amends can be made to satisfy the Friends of those who were made

your Aunt Hannah & myself went yesterday to Monthly Meeting In a more [?] time I never drove to Easton---We called after meeting and took dinner close at Joseph Braggs--Himself and Wife we found to be among first class of young house keepers-both Friends and both appear about right--Simon Wilcox & Wife were there for an afternoon visit--

Our Monthly meeting was well attended and quite large notwithstanding the extreme badness of the roads--We had the communications of Uncle Joseph as usual with a number of the younger class--could you find it any way convient to get to Phila Mo Meeting I think you would not consider the time Lost but well Spent--Cyntha [?] I think appears quite as well as heretofore and ^I very much regret that she could not have spent the winter with you--How Deborah couldn't continue her school as a permanent Institution for the improvement Nothing new since I commenced--Folks for the house well I am [your?] or say they will write next Daniel Anthony
