Principal Officer

Framingham, Massachusetts

Dear Dr. Van Waters:

John Weatherby, an inmate at the state prison, is a person whom I came
to know last year when I was giving a course there for inmates. He is a
college graduate, interested in psychology. He expects to see the Parole
Board within the next few weeks.

He wrote a very interesting review of "The Strange Journey," a report
which I loaned him, of a research study carried on in the state prison in
North Carolina by Richard McCleery and published by the University of North
Carolina. This research, I think, is an interesting and valuable contribu-
tion.

At his special request I am sending you this review by Weatherby, to-
gether with the McCleery report. He did not say precisely what he expected
you would do with the review but I know he would value your comments as he
believes you would understand his point of view and the points he is trying
to make relating to the usual treatment of offenders in our state prisons.

If you care to make any comments and to return the material to me I
would also appreciate it. If you wish to address him directly you may do
so at the State Prison or send a reply in my care which I will see that he gets
when he is paroled.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Edwin Powers
Director of Research
and Correctional Education
