Waverley, Mass.

May 12

A glorius day. The clouds in the morning
breaking early into and forming into sunny masses.
George & I took the electric to Waverley this morning
and spent 2 or 3 hours wandering through the
Reservation. The leaves are coming out rapidly
now and the willows & birches are draped with
their catkins. Saxifrage ({Saxifraga} virginiana). Columbine
& Violets, the common sps. {species} are out. Beaver Brook is
very full and the Waterfall is a mass of foaming
water. The twelve white ducks in the Lower Pond
attracted a good deal of attention. I was surprised
to see them diving and swimming several rods
under water. We listed the following birds, all
in Waverley : —

Colaptes a. {auratus} luteus 2* Tachycineta bicolor 12
Chaetura pelagica, 4 Vireo gilvus 2*
Cyanocitta cristata, 2* 1 on nest seen Apr. 28 & May 5. Mniotilta varia 1 ♂ {male} 1 ♀ {female} mating
Corvus americanus, 10 Dendroica aestiva 6*
Agelaius phoeniceus 6 ♂♂ {male} 1 ♀ {female} {Dendroica} caerulescens 1* for about 20 min. end of lower Reserv.
Icterus galbula 2 {Dendroica} virens 2*
Quiscalus q. {quiscula} aeneus 6 Setophaga ruticilla 1*
Carpodacus purpureus 1* Galeoscoptes carolinensis 3*
Astragalinus tristis 2* Merula migratoria abundant*
Spizella socialis 6* Sialia sialis 3*
Zamelodia ludoviciana 1 ♀ {female} 22 species
Melospiza fasciata 6*
Mrs. J. B. Greenough saw a male Hummer outside of her window
this morning. I saw my first Olive-backed Thrush this af-
ternoon in the Garden.
