285 — 1891 — — Jan. 10 — — Cambridge Mass. — Have received lately packages of very fine plants from Wm. M. Canby, Thos. C. Porter, F. E. McDonald.
— Jan. 29 — I have been appointed on the Visiting Comm. for Botany at Harvard College with Mr. F. H. Peabody & Walter Hunnewell. Last eventing I went to a reception at the house of Chas. Francis Adams, Commonwealth Ave.. The guests were the Corporation, Overseers, Faculty & Visiting Comms. It was a very handsome affair. Met a [host?] of friends, Messrs. Watson S, Ganong, Setchell, B. Watson Drs. G. G. Kennedy & Robinson & Farlow. Have arranged with Mr. Peabody & Dr. Farlow to visit with the collections in the Museum, nexxt Monday.

Feb. 4 — Jan. 30th I called on Mrs. Britton who has been in Cambridge lately. Sunday Feb. 1, she spent the afternoon & evening with us. Monday Feb. 2nd I went to Dr. Farlow's room and met Mr. Francis H. Peabody, Dr. Geo. G. Kennedy Mr. Nat. T. Kidder, Mr. W Hunnewell & Mr. Hammond. We all went over to the Botanical Museum on Oxford St. and spent some time going over the whole department. Saw W.F. Ganong and Setchell. Dined Feb 2nd with Wm Brewster and the Peep Club. —
Feb. 16 — Dined with Wm Brewster & Peep Club. Attended the Meeting of the Nutt. Orn. Club in the evening. —
Feb. 19 — Spent the P.M. at the Bot. Museum. Saw Ganong, Seymour & Farlow. Went over all the rooms. Extremely interesting. Have mounted since Jan. 15th nearly 500 sheets —

286 — 1891 — Feb. 24 — Cambridge Mass. — Went to the Gray Herb. yesterday A.M. & P.M. Met Dr. Vasey there. Am delighted to know him. He has dined with me this evening and visited my Herb. with which he was much pleased. ——— [note in margin] Mar. 22. L.H. Bailey appeared unexpectedly to-day and spent the night. He went over a good many of my Carices.
Apr. 5. — Cambridge, Mass. Just returned from a delightful trip to New York & Washington with bro. George. Left Boston 11 A.M. Mar. 27. (Fri.) B.&A. R.R. N.Y. at 5.30. Conn. {River} over its banks. To Hotel Wellington where we were welcomed by Dr. & Mrs. Britton & Dr. Morong. Staid in N.Y. till Monday night (30th). Went to Columbia College, was some time in the Herb. Met Dr. Wheelock, Mr. A. Hollick, Miss Vail. Saw Dr. Morong's So. Amer. plants. Went to Brooklyn Bridge, walked over. Wonderful! [Up?] Statue of Library. Looked out of head! Saw Jesup Woods at Nat. Hist. Mus. They are magnificent. The cases of mounted birds there are unique & remarkable. Visited Battery. Saw "County Fair" at Union Park Theater. Over Central Park & Menagerie. Grass getting green. Called on Mrs. Tuttle. Saw Jim & Margaret & Dr. T. Visited Stores of all kinds. Elegant displays at Florists for Easter. To Harlem R. by elevated R.R. To Washingon Monday night, arriving at 8.30 A.M. Rains for first time. Staid at the St. James Hotel. Staid 4 1/2 days. Visited Agric. Depart. Smithsonian, Nat. Mus. Fish Commission, White House, Capitol, Botanic Garden. Dined with J. N. Rose Tues. evening (31st) and with Prof. Ward Thurs. evening (Apr. 2nd). Met Dr. Vasey, Mr. Holsinger, Galloway Marx. F. H. Knowlton showed us all over the Nat. Mus. Rose went up the Monument with us. Height of Monument 555 ft. Elevator takes you wup 500 ft in 8 1/4 min. View grand!! Visited Corcoran Gallery of Art. The paintings were very fine. Walked about the City, admiring the beautiful streets & Circles with such fine bronze statues in them, McPherson, Jackson, Dupont, Thomas, etc. etc. Spent 1 1/2 days making my own selection of plants from the Duplicates Herb. at Dept. Agric. Had my lists with me. Went from the Genus Clematis through Rosaceae, having previouosly received plants from Crataegus through Filicium. took 116 species including 30 sp. of Gramineae. The lawns were very green. Forsythia in bloom. Allium vineale is a persistent week every where in & about the City. Its leaves were from 6 in. to 1 ft. high. Visited Patent Office & Centre Market. Sanguinaria, Hepatica, & Arbutus for sale! Weather cloudy, cook, sometimes rainy. For Home, Sat. (4th) 3.15 PM Home by Sunday 9 A.M. Shall never forget my trip. Everybody was so kind & hospitable —

287 — 1891 — Apr. 23rd Cambridge, Mass. Birthday! [Ae?] 43. Spring is making rapid strides. Grass quite green. Have received poisoned & mounted this year collections fro Dr. J. H. Sandberg, Messr Drake & Dickson, C.S. Lloyd, Edwin Faxon, Miss Taylor (Balt. Md), M. L. Fernald, J. C. [Parlin?] (Buckfield, Me.), Wm M. Canby (2 pkg?), F. E. McDonald, M. S. Bebb, Rose, J. N. (4 large pkgs), my own Jaffrey coll. and now I have in the mounting box the coll. which I got in Wash lately. Have just mounted the grasses. I have lately had a new case made containing 28 holes. It goes in the sewing room. I have expanded my whole collection and have some 6 holes left over. Have also made a complete desiderata list of flower, fruit, etc. according to the New Man. A few weeks ago Dr. Vasey dined with me: also Prof. J. M. Coulter. C. R. Barnes is here till Sept. revising the Field, Forest & Garden Botany. He dines with us occasionally. Dr. Sandberg may go to Alaska to coll. from Government. What a trip!! I constantly have most delightful letters from my warm friend M. S. Bebb. J. R. Chuchill has given me his yearly package. Shall mount many and send many to Washington. He got Carex aestivalis in Jaffrey! also Juncus greenei!! an apparent stray from the sea beaches. David F. Day sends me fl. & fr. of Epipactis helleborine and also his photograph — E. A. Rau sends me large numbers of photos of our Amer. Botanists. He makes negatives from photos, engravings etc. = 25 cts each. My trip to N.Y. & Wash. was due to my Aunt Anna's kindness.
Apr. 25 — Cambridge, Mass By 2.17 PM train with J. R. Churchill & H. M. Purdie to Milton Lower Mills. By carryall to W. Quincy via Randolph Ave. Then into the woods. Catkin bearing trees all in flower. Viola sagittata, {palmata} var. {cucululata}. blanda, [pectinata?], Caltha, Lindera, Carex Penn., Vacc. Penn. in flower. Cold & [chllly?] with snow squalls. Tea at J.R.C's Home by 10 P.M.

288 — 1891 — — May 3 — — Cambridge Mass — I have finished mounting the plants from Wash. D.C. got in my Easter recess. Have also mounted some plants from Wm Trelease & A. A. Wright. In 4 days since my return from Wash I have mounted about 200 sheets. The garden trees are white with blossoms and the leave are bright & green.
