270 1890 — Aug. 18-19-21 — Jaffrey, N.H. — The record of the past four days is sick — I threw myself on the bed Sunday (17) before supper and have had rather a siege of it. Dr. Wasserhoeft Monday A.M. came and pronounced it Pharyngitis. My pharynx was swollen & sore. I was sore from head to foot and during the first part of the week, I was troubled by nausea. M. is such a good nurse. I was extremely weak. Everybody has been so kind. 7 gifts of flowers have come in. Elinor has been unremitting and, as soon as I was up in my armchair, has spent a good deal of her time sitting with me. She has attended to sunning my blotters and helped M. in changing the blotters of the plants. This P.M., I went down for a short time on to the piazza. Tues. (19) Randolph collected a fine Lobelia cardinalis for me. Elinor & M. put it in press. I trust I shall soon be right — Down to my first meal at tea to-night (21). Elinor has made me a most elaborate napkin ring of Paper Birch. She is kindness itself. ————— Aug. 22 — Jaffrey N.H. Have been improving to-day, was down to breakfast. Walked to Keene road, also to brook. Elinor & I changed blotters. Shirley took a group of us. ————— Aug. 23 — Jaffrey, N.H. Rain all day. Staid in the house reading &c Have been improving all day — This evening I read aloud to Elinor & Kitty Thompson, "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. —————
