My dear Doctor,
Two days ago I got your letter, and a day before that I had received the first of part of your second volume through which I looked with much gratification; but I have had no leisure to examine it carefully; — and write this in haste to answer some of your questions.
Any thing that you want to send to Germany you will best put on board some Bremen vessel. Dr Schultz's direction is : Deidesheim, near Durkheim Pfalz [wich is a part of Bavaria] As to sending numbers of the Flora, I do not know — as I dont know how the returns of such small amounts of money should be made.
I am very much obliged to you for the promptness with which you have endeavoured to make up the desiderata for me; — and am only sorry that I probably can make no returns myself before fall or beginning of winter. — The same gentlemen who have paid you the money for me, will charge their selves with any thing you may have to send to me : Mssrs E & T. Poppe Pearl street, No 90 or 92 I believe. — Please direct the parcel to Dr G Engelmann, care of Mssrs Kimm & Jewes St Louis Missouri —
Nuttalls paper on the Compositae I have got from Mr Gambel of Philadelphia, who called
Engelmann, George May 30, 1841 [2] (seq. 9)
on one on his way to Sta Fe.
Your questions I can not answer satisfactorly I do not recollect even to have sent seeds of a Leonurus to Frankfurt, nor did Dr Fresenius show me the plant there. —
Iris missouriensis is probably J. [Juniperis] viginiana (?) the only one which we have here, if it is not a Rocky Mtn plant, which Mr Duerinck may have obtained in a garden here. —
Cerasus duerinckii is probably a plant nearly related to virginiana and serotina, from the Mountains, cultivated here in a garden; I do not know Spach's C. densiflora (I can not get at my books, am moving, don't know therefore, wether I quote right), but the name would be appropriate for this plant; racemes pendulous flowers crowded; — I have a specimen from Mr Duerinck, which I will send you. He is now in Cincinnati, but I will write him about these things. —
I have sent the seeds of Actimeris helianthus and squamosa to Frankfurt —, which the oppositi folia is I don't know; but have very little faith in any of these species.— You find in Decandolle's Prodromus a Campanula intermedia (I believe) also named by Dr Fresenius; which is nothing but C. acuminata, sent by me.
Of both Helianthus I know nothing at all — but we have several species which I can not identify.
Heracleum auritum Bischof I have seen last summer in the bot garden of Heidelberg but I am confident that I never sent the seeds from here — I do not recollect ever to have seen an Heracleum in the U States.
Lathyrus engelmanni appears to be pusillus Ell[iot] from the description. I have not seen it. Trifolium platycephalum perhaps Tr. carolinianum I have collected the seeds in low shady woods near Fort Gibson, and considered the plant then Tr. stoloniferum but can not tell any thing definite about it Monarda amplexicaulis Bischoff is a very com[mon] plant here, in flower now, before any other. Monarda but the leaves are not sessiese[?] but always short petioled ; cordate. I could not identify it, but am confident it must be a well known old species.
In a week I expect to move to my new place where I shall have a convenient study all to myself, then I expect, if the burning heat of the young summer does not create too much sickness, to make up a collection and notes for you; but I won't promise you would be induced not to believe, any more, as I have disappointed you before.— Of Chara etc I have received nothing as yet. — I expect soon to write again.
Very truly your friend, George Engelmann
Dr A. Gray
