41 tho some wt compressed seeds — (or they may be called oblong) —

The root is cylindrical jointed extended thick, spungy, extending runing along horizontally, just under ye surface of ye mud, sending down nume= =rous fibres. The tast of ye root is extremely aerited, producing a prickling pain in the mouth much like that of nettles & more sevee than ye Arum

The stem is round, spungy, naked, 8 or 10 inch high. The leaves are cordate, thick, smooth, intire terminating in a sharp point — they are supported on large spungy groved pedicales, longer than ye stem. The top of ye stalk is imbraced by a foliacious spatha, white on ye upper side & green on ye lower. The florets have a white [cypranu?] from ye numerous stamans not

42 Not common. Have seen it only in one place. Over ye ponds in a sringy cold mirey run, descending into a swamp. May & June.

June 25th Foetid — Bramble — Smilex Diocecia Hexandria — Male. 11 Species. Vide Catesby

Calix, — 6 lanceolate or bent quite reflected petal leaves.

Corol — none

Stam — 6 simple; shorter than the cup. Anthera oblong, erect, roundish, compressed, Female

Calix — 6 lanceolated p patent leaves.

Corol. none { Honey cup.

Pist — Germen globular, above, Stile non — Stigmata 3, oblong; reflected; very large.

Fruit. A round berry containing 3 cells & six in roundish

43 roundish seeds, that is, two in each cell.

11 Species of Lin. comes the nearet & will answer — The stalk is firm, but slender, grows 4 or 5 feet high, & supports is supported by numerous tendrils twining about whatever happens to be near it. Many branches are sent off from the main stalk. The leaves are ovato cordate, acute at the apex terminating in a sharp point. 7 or 8 longitudinal nerves, placed alternate. The Blossoms small green= =ish — stand in forming a single globular umbel on a long flower stalk rising from the axilla of ye leaves. The smell is ex= tremely offensive. Common in moist ground by the sides of hedges & amon The berries are first red then black grow in thick round bunches.

44 June 24th Poison Wood — Well discribed by Linn. in his generic Characters, tho not intirely — Find the leaves vary very much in their form on ye same tree. The juice will stain Linin black.

June 30th Poison Ivy

Calix — is a perianthium small divided into 5 deep segts eretc & acumi= =nated — Cup — small — l

Corol — 5 lanceotate reflected petals much longer yn segts of calix —

Stam. 5 subulated, erect filaments, much shorter yn ye corol, but nearly of longer yn cup. Anthera incumbent & bifid at ye base.

45 Pistil — Germen, Turban shaped & above, or it f roundish & comp; & pointed Stile shorter yn stamina & is very short — Stigma simple. The germen is coloured ye same as ye petals

Capsul — nearly pair shaped — hairy containing one seed — I cannot find more yn one seed & that supported or connected with ye capsule by a kind of pedicle Examin it when ripe —

Stalks round runing very close to Body's of trees & adhering by numerous short pointed tendrals sent of from ye body of ye stem — & insinuating yrs selves deep in to ye body of ye tree —
