21 Jacobs Ladder — It agrees with ye 4th species of Lin — except ye leaves are sessile — must be a new species —
The stem is round firm, & erect & naked about half its length. But the upper part reclines on wh ar places, alternate, ovate, nervous leaves. The blossoms are suspended by by very small flower stalks sent off from ye axilla of ye leaves — The blossoms are of a greenish white — It has been mistaken for ye Jacobs Ladder.

Calix none — Corol. has a narrow compounded base 6 nearly erect lanceolate petals, curved at their claws, & obtusely carinated, growing gradually wider & more patent — & appear bellshaped. some what spreading in ye genl. form of corol. —
The Nectr. is placed at yes base of ye petals & is covered with a very thin menbrane
Stam. 6 subulated, erect filamts. of ye length of ye petals Corol. rising from ye claws of ye petals & within ye nectar. — some what hairy. — Anthera

Seeds Seeds many, or angular roundish in 2 series — Let ye fruit be Examd.
Several leaves rise from the root embracing each other. They are oblong, nervose — very thick & smooth, & terminate [?] in a sharp point. 5 or 6 inch long 3 from their center riseth a single round, stalk generally naked naked but some times has one small leaf. The top is inclinded & supports three or four green= =ish yellow flowers with their disks down inclining to wards ye ground. Among brakes in moist ground. 24 June 4th C3. Ord 1 — Iris — Blue Flagg —
The blossoms are smooth the inner segt smaller broader yn ye stigmata; The Capsule triangular & furrowed; The leaves sword-shaped; the stem cylindrical, somewhat compressed & longer ye leaves ; several blossoms rise out of ye same sheath. The blossoms are blue, beau= =tifully variegated with yellow white, yellow, & purple. They may be greatly improved by cultivation. May & June very common in moist moist ground wet places.
The juice or a decoction of the roots have are a power= =fully cathertic & have produced plentiful evacuations when other means have failed, but are too acrid & drastic to be admitted in common practice.
