Mr. Thomas Knight Boston Novr. 22d 1765
Sir
Your fav'rs of 31st Octo'r 15th & 28th Dec'r 1764 are now before
me, they have lain unanswer'd till now for want of opportunity to your Island,
the Inclos'd Copy will serve for an Answer to what you say relat'g to the Vessell
you Order'd me to purchase for you. Mr. Erving sometime since paid me the £15
Sterling for the mistake in the Pipe of Madiera Wine which I remitted to Mr. Bryan
before the Rec't of your Letter mentioning it, it being from him I made the Demand
for it, & doubt not he has accounted with you for it, I have not Rec'd any part of Trails
Order on Mr. Nelson, I did imagine when I wrote you that there might be something
due to him from me on Acco'ts but was mistakn as part of his Interest in
my lands then was an Average Loss in an Insurance Office, which by Em-
bezzelment of what was said & the failure of a House in Philadelphia whose
part of the Cargo sav'd was Lodg'd is Lessen'd much, Mr. Nelson is now in
a flourishing way in the West Indies & tis thought will shortly be able to
settle all his affairs, however this disappointment arises I certainly consulted
your Interest in taking Mr. Nelson as security with Mr. Trail
& I dare say you would done the same had you been present. I have wrote
Capt. Gould several times about your money but have not been able to
procure payment, shall write him again & press him to make payment,
& when I have opportunity will try to get Vernard to allow for the mistake in
his Accott had you wrote me at first the Value in Sterling it would prevented
any demand from you, but Mr. Fitch who is gone to Connecticut will enquire
into the affair & if any prospect of recover'g any thing for you, you may
depend I'll use my best endeavours, am glad my not engag'g in pur-
chas'g a Vessell for you was agreable, we have never heard a word of Capt
Austin since he left you & fear you are without hopes of anything but a
total loss, which really gives me pain, tho you are not much worse off then to
have paid the Duty here, observe what you say of Mr. Bryan, when he wrote me
he was little in cash for your Accott he thought the 24 Pipes ine would been
shipt to me, which makes a wide difference, the Letters Inclos'd in yours of 28th
Dec'r were duly forward'd, as there has been no Vessell from hence for your place
have not been able to ship the Loaf Sugar & Sperma Ceti Candles you wrote for
I am Your most H'ble Serv't
