ADDRESS ALL CORRESPONDENCE TO THE COMPANY

CHICAGO, Oct. 17, 1906.

W. E. Bideker, Chief,
Fire Department,
Fort Worth, Texas.

Dear Chief,-

I want to confirm verbal statement made to yourself and
Alderman Wogomann by the writer in regard to rebuilding of your Aerial
Truck.

I have this morning gone over this matter very carefully in
detail with our General Sales Manager, who has just returned from the
Elmira Factory. There, within the last week, they have been going very
carefully over the matter of rebuilding trucks; we, therefore, speak
with the very latest factory information in his mind.

The modern Quick Raising Aerial Trucks are of necessity built
heavier than the old type of Babcock or Hayes Trucks, consequently, the
turn-tables are too light, particularly in face of the fact that they
have to be grooved out for ball bearings, which lightens them still more.
The gears, springs, and axles are all too light and have to be renewed.
In the case of your truck new wheels would be necessary. Complete new
steering gear is necessary; and then due to the fact that trussed
ladders are to be used the ladder arches must all be changed; tillerman's
seat must be renewed with our improved swinging attachment; new driver's
seat complete is necessary, so that when you come to figure the matter
over, you will see that we are furnishing practically a new truck.
About all we use is the old frame. Against this you will have to pay
freight to and from Dallas to our factory, certainly not less than $500,
so that in round numbers, the rebuilding of your old Babcock Truck with
the Improved Quick Raising Device will cost you in the neighborhood of
$4200.00. Add $500.00 or $600.00 to this, and you can get a new
up-to-date Quick Raising Aerial Truck, with Trussed Ladders.

If you will kindly let us know as soon as you have taken this
matter up, we shall be very glad to have our representative call on
you.

Yours very truly,
AMERICAN-LA FRANCE FIRE ENGINE CO.
By V. T. Doolittle
Manager.
