SPECIFICATIONS –0–

EXTENT OF CONTRACT– This contract includes the making of the necessary excavation, and the furnishing of all the materials and labor necessary to the construction and completion of a Covered Underground Concrete Reservoir, in the City of Fort Worth, Texas, as described and specified in these specifications, and as shown on the drawing for said Reservoir on file, which are especially referred to for full description, and which are hereby made a part of the contract.

LOCATION– The reservoir shall be located on the Fort Worth City Water Works property, at the point designated by the City Engineer.

EXCAVATION– The excavation shall be neatly made to the lines and grades as shown on the plan, which lines and grades will be given by the Engineer. Such excavated material as shall be selected for the covering of the Reservoir, or for other special purposes, shall be kept separate from the balance of the material, and placed not more than two hundred feet from the Reservoir walls.

After the excavation is completed, and before the concrete work is begun, the bottom shall be smoothed, wet, and compacted, so as to form a suitable foundation for the floor, to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Upon the completion of the concrete work, earth filling shall be carefully tamped and puddled behind the walls, so as to compactly fill the space between the walls and the face of the cut, and, when directed by the Engineer, the material reserved for the purpose shall be hauled upon the roof of the Reservoir, so as to completely cover it to a depth of one two foot.

Re-filling between walls and face of cut, and also the placing of material upon the roof of the Reservoir, shall be included in the price bid for the entire work.

CONCRETE--

All of the concrete work-- foundations, walls, piers, and floors, ---shall be placed, and shall conform, strictly with the sizes and dimensions as shown on the plan thereof. All of the ingredients of the concrete shall be of first-class quality of their respective kinds, the Engineer being the judge.

Concrete, except in the roof, shall be composed and made as follows: One part of "Iola" Portland Cement, or equal, and eight parts of acceptable clean "pit-gravel", with sand included-- gravel to be sound, and sand sharp, and proportion of gravel to sand not to exceed six to four, and be not less than five to five.

(The Engineer hereby gives special notice that the best "pit-gravel" will be insisted on, to comply with the above specifications.)

A barrel of Portland Cement, weighing at least 380 pounds if in sacks, or 400 pounds if in wood, will be considered as four cubic feet, any rules or customs to the contrary notwithstanding.

Gravel-nonsuring boxes to be of thirty-two cubic foot size, and struck off with straight edge for each barrel of cement. Upon measuring the thirty-two cubic feet of mixed gravel and sand, the barrel of cement shall be added and thoroughly incorporated therewith, dry, by at least two "turnings" or "cuttings" with shovels on proper platform.

Water in proper amount shall then be sprinkled onto the dry-mixed mass, and said mass shall be turned and returned with shovels until thoroughly and homogeneously mixed. At least two "wet" turnings must be made on the mixing platform, but the Engineer will require more if, in his judgment, they are necessary to secure thorough mixture.

Contractor shall furnish and set forms or templates for concrete work, said forms or templates to be reinforced with metal so as to prevent distortion from moisture or other cause.

The concrete shall be laid in single layers six inches thick, not, (after thorough ramming), and shall be rammed until water flushes to the surface. Great care must be taken to avoid excess of water, as any concrete which upon thorough ramming appears "boggy" or "sloppy" will be rejected and ordered removed.

ROOF--

The rood of the Reservoir shall be of reinforced concrete, the concrete of which shall be composed of one part of Portland Cement, as specified above, two parts of first-class sand, and five parts of screened cinders. The necessary cinders will be furnished to the contractor, unscreened, at the Water Works plant near the Reservoir site, and the contractor shall screen same, to the Engineer's satisfaction
