We your Finance Com. beg to report that we are without authority to make the correction asked in the within petition and that we know of no laws or custom governing renditions of this character - but that our understanding is that personal property is supposed to be rendered at its actual value.

OFFICE OF W. J. GILVIN, City Assessor and Collector

DEPUTIES: R. G. LITTLEJOHN, W. B. MARTEL, L. E. DAY.

Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 6 1904

Honorable Chairman and Members of the Finance Committee, City Council, Ft. Worth, Tex.

Gentlemen, Referring to attached petition, the property of Mr. Mountcastle was assessed as

Lot Block Addition Ground Improvement Total
N 60 E 110 8100 ft 3 41 Jen South 2000 2800 4800
N 50 S 150 E 110 " 3
When the description should have been
W 50 E 110 S 100 ft. 3 41 Jen South
N 50 S 150 W 100 E 110 ft 3
The ground owned is 1/6 less on the front lot and 1/11 less on back lot than is assessed, and as the ground is valued at $2000 - I think a fair assessment would be Ground $1700, Imp $2800. Total $4500.

Yours respectfully, W. J. Gilvin City Assr. & Coll.

Mr. Gilvin:

There still appears a discrepancy. Mr. Mountcastle states that he bought only 50 x 100 feet, not 50 x 110 ft. - that the question of a possible alley in the rear of his place not having been dedicated, is a matter into which he has nothing to do - which being the case it is manifestly unfair to assess him with the extra 10 feet. Please investigate and return this to me tomorrow or Friday so that it may be acted on definitely at the next meeting.

J. Rosenbaum Grain Co. (INCORPORATED) GRAIN MERCHANTS

Cable Address "ROSEGRAIN, CHICAGO"

FT. WORTH, TEXAS December 18th, '03.

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council, City of Fort Worth, Texas

Gentlemen:---

Some days since I called on the City Collector to pay my taxes and found that my property at 1126 Pennsylvania Avenue was assessed as 60 feet by 110 feet on Pennsylvania Avenue, assessment at $4800. The facts are I only own 50 by 100 feet, consequently I have been assessed for 20 feet of ground I do not own. I beg you to authorize the Collector to correct the rendition to read 50 feet by 100 feet, and also to reduce the value to $4000. instead of 4800. The assessment I judge is simply a clerical error.

Yours truly, G. C. Mountcastle

GCM-AW

Mr. Mountcastle further states that the property is not otherwise properly described.

Your Finance Com. therefore recommends that the above be referred to the City Assessor and Collector for a statement of the facts in this case.
