Ruth Herbarium

Over 80 years ago, a small boy, the son of a clergyman roamed the hills of Delaware and studied nature and wild flowers.

Albert Ruth, for that was his name, grew up into manhood and married. Her moved to Tennessee, where he taught English and later, Latin and Greek at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

He was still interested in nature and particularly in wild flowers. Albert Ruth took week-end trips into the mountains

of Tennessee to study and collect wild flowers, and before long he had interested friends in the study of plants. Exploration parties were organized, and trips made [to all the] [crossed out] in the vicinity of Knoxville and Nashville.

Mr. Ruth began exchanging specimens of the plants of Tennessee with other collectors in other parts of the United States, just as stamp collectors exchange stamps.

was made Superintendent of Public Schools at Knoxville, Tennessee, a position that he held for 26 years.

All of this time Mr Ruth spent his spare moments collecting classifying and studying plants.

Mr. Ruth retired from the Knoxville Schools and moved to Texas.

He took up the study of Texas plants and became an authority on plants of Tarrant County.
