James The Eight by the Grace of God King of
Scotland, England, France & Ireland, Defender of the
Faith &c. Whereas We are fully satisfyed with the duty
Loyalty & affection of Our Trusty & wellbeloved Dougal
Stewart of Appin, & of the many & good services performd
by his Family to the Crown upon all occasions, and being
also well persuaded that he himself as one of the Chiefs of the
Clans wants only agood opportunity to exert himself, as his
Predecessors have done, at the head of his Clan & Following, for
the recovery & in the defence of Our Just Rights, & for the
releiving of his Native Country from the present Tyranny &
Usurpation it groans under, We are resolved to Conferr
on him the Tittle & Dignity aftermentiond, as an encourage=
=ment to him & an obligation on his heirs to continue
firmly attatched to their Rightful & Lawful Soveraigns, & to
Support upon all occasions to the utmost of their power the
intrest of the Crown. Our will & pleasure Therefore
is, and We hereby Ordain Letters Patent to pass under
Our Great Seal of Our Ancient Kingdom of Scotland,
Making & Creating, as We hereby Make & Create
the said Dougal Stewart of Appin a Lord & Peer of
Parliament of our said ancient Kingdom, by the
name
