Places to See! IN AND AROUND Tallahassee

STATE CAPITOL -- Only Southern capitol east of the Mississippi River not seized during the War Between the States. The first section of the present building was occupied by the legislative and executive officers in January, 1841. Other state buildings including the beautiful new Supreme Court edifice, surround the Capitol. Capitol Center plan when completed will be one of the most impressive groups in the world.

THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, northwest corner North Adams and West Park Avenue, built in 1832, has an old slave gallery.

THE MAY OAK, East Park Avenue and Gadsden Street. Under the tree May Day festivals have been held annually since 1835. Pictured on front cover is a lovely May Queen.

GOVERNOR'S MANSION -- the Southern Colonial mansion on a square block of landscaped grounds, was built in 1906.

THE GROVE, built in 1825, North Adams Street and First Avenue, was once the home of Richard Keith Call, an early Territorial Governor, pictured on front cover. Home of "The Tallahassee Girl" written by Maurice Thompson. Birthplace of the first white child in Tallahassee.

TOMBS OF PRINCE ACHILLE MURAT, nephew of Napoleon, and his Princess -- about three blocks from the center of Tallahassee in the old Episcopal cemetery.

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY -- enrollment of over 6,000 students. The beautiful campus, landscaped with majestic liveoaks, enchanting azaleas and pine trees, has for many years been one of Florida's outstanding attractions. The University is famous for its unique "FSU Circus," featuring students as trapeze artists and thrilling gymnasts. Interesting geological exhibits are open to the public.

THE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM -- Outstanding exhibitions of contemporary art and American Indian civilization. The museum features the famous Carter collection] of prehistoric Peruvian materials and displays of the works of Florida's Indians, past and present, assembled by University archaeologists and enthologists. The University art gallery features a succession of exhibitions of outstanding works of art from the important national and international galleries and museums. Open weekdays from 12:30 to 5, Saturdays from 9 to 12:30, and Sundays from 2 to 5.

TALLAHASSEE COUNTRY CLUB -- One of finest 18-hole municipal golf courses in Florida. Frequented by champions and many distinguished visitors to "The Sunshine State".

FLORIDA AGRICULTURAL AND MECHANICAL UNIVERSITY for Negroes -- situated on the of the plantation of Territorial Governor Duval was established as a co-educational college in 1905. Enrollment over 2,000.

NATURE BRIDE on State Road 59, 14 miles from Tallahassee -- where the St. Marks River disappears underground, a park with monument marks site of battle fought March 6, 1865, where a Federal march on Tallahassee was stopped.

WAKULLA SPRINGS, 20 miles south of U. S. 319 -- the largest spring from a single source in Florida. Beautiful jungle cruise in glass bottom boats.

ST. MARKS, 18 miles from Tallahassee -- a fishing village near which stands the ruins of Fort St. Marks, a stone structure built in 1739. Historic lighthouse and U.S. Wildlife Refuge.

PANACEA, 32, miles, and CARRABELLE, 59 miles. Gulf of Mexico beaches south on U.S. 319. Bathing and fishing. Boats and tackle for hire. All facilities.
