1965 TRAFFIC SAFETY PROGRAM
SPONSORED BY SAFETY DIVISION, PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPT.
FLORIDA FED OF WOMEN'S CLUBS

TO ALL CLUB PRESIDENTS AND PROGRAM CHAIRMEN:

Why not obtain those four (4) point on your Honor Score I wrote you about
in June? It's all very easy - just have Traffic Safety as one of your
Programs this year! The following are a few suggestions:

1. Well in advance of your meeting, obtain the assistance of the
Information Officer of the Florida Highway Patrol in your area
(or a local police or safety officer), inviting him to attend
your meeting and to assist in explaining the answers to the test
to be given and any other questions which may be directed to him;
also, to obtain for your the Florida Driver's Handbook to be used
in this Safety Program.

2. The meeting prior to your Safety Program distribute this Driver's
Handbook to each member of your Club, instructing them to study
the book carefully and learn the answers to the 41 questions con-
tained in it.

3. Attached hereto is the Driver's Test to be given to the women.
Have the test mimeographed and distributed to your members the day
of the Safety Meeting. It will be a 20-minute test test. DO NOT
divulge which questions will be used beforehand. After the test,
is completed, the answers will then be given to the ladies, and
they will grade their papers accordingly.

4. As mentioned before, a ten-to-fifteen minute question and answer
period will follow. Afterwards, this same Florida Highway Patrol Officer,
or an eye doctor, will give each woman an eye examination. If your
Club is large in membership, you may need two or three members to
assist in these examinations. Do not forget to obtain beforehand
enough of the necessary equipment to conduct these tests quickly
and smoothly.

5. In conclusion, a short film on Traffic Safety can be shown.

Now you may say, "Just what is the purpose of this program?" My answer is,
as follow:

1. We will familiarize ourselves with the latest Florida Traffic
Safety Laws and with the Florida Driver's Handbook.

2. We will know just how well we can see and will corrent any defects,
if any, that may appear in the eye examination.

3. Through this film, the discussions, and our studying the manual,
we will alert ourselves to the many responsibilities of being a
GOOD, DEFENSIVE, ALERT, AND CAPABLE DRIVER and will impart this
safely knowledge to our families and friends to lessen the terrible
death tolls on Florida's highways.

My very best wishes for your success in this extremely worthwhile venture.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Ray A. Shepard, State Chairman
Division of Safety, FFWC
P. O. Box 421, Edgewater, Fla.
