COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT PROJECT TALLAHASSEE JUNIOR WOMEN'S CLUB JULY 1957

Dear Club Member: How many times have you said "Why doesn't Tallahassee have ________? "Or I wish Tallahassee would do something about ______." This is no longer chatter. We, the Junior Women's Club have decided to initiate a Community Achievement Project, in Tallahassee.

What is it? How do we do it? What does it involve? What do we have to do? These and other questions we hope to answer for you in this brief space.

The 1956-1958 Community Achievement Contest is sponsored by the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Sears-Roebuck Foundation. This contest is offered to clubs in the knowledge that there is no end, no termination, in community development. The accomplishment of one goal leads to the vision of another. There is continuous growth in learning by doing.

Emphasis on cooperation and participation of other groups and individuals with clubs which are priveleged to initiate this program, remains an IMPORTANT factor in this contest.

"It is only when these projects become means towards the building and knitting together of a more vital kind of community life, rather than simply ends in themselves, and it is only when IN THE PROCESS of accomplishing such projects the entire community shares in the responsibility, the carrying out of the effort, and in the credit for deeds well done, that you have genuine community achievement rather than just club achievement..." These words are those of a spokesman for the 1956 Contest judges. They express the meaning and purpose of the Community Achievement Contest.

Eligibility: Any club in the continental U.S. and Alaska. Our will compete in Group B with clubs of more than 75 members. The project may relate to a city, a neighborhood, a town or cover any natural population area reardless of boundary lines. There are over sixty thousand dollars in prizes. One club (let's be the one) will win $10,000. This money is to be used in the community.

Scoring: The judges will score each entry (which is a scrapbook made by us) on: (1) merit and need of the project...25 points; (2) extent of cooperation of other community groups...25 points; and (3) effectiveness and permanent value to the community of the project undertaken...50 points.

Report: It shall consist of a statement describing the projects, with press clippings, pictures, letters, etc. where available. It should be in notebook form. Efforts and creative talent should be put into the writing of the report and proper description of progress made on the project and the final results achieved by the efforts of our club and the other groups which it brought in to cooperate in the program. There is a state preliminary selection on the bases of the reports submitted.

In a nutshell it is our duty to consider the needs of the community, to determine the best methods by which to meet them, and to organize the cooperative foreces in the community to reach the desired goal. It is at this point the club turns the project over to the community group and becomes a representative in the group. All this by March 1, 1958.
