=est I feel for the safety of Our Citizens in Alachua has induced me to send an express
in order to ascertain their situation, that I may be prepared to adopt necessary me=
=asures for their support and protection until another Army can be drawn to the field,
for the purpose of putting an end to the War; This in all probability may not be
done sooner than next fall I have therefore to request that you will by ^the^ return of
the express, give me the following information

1st Whether the people of your neighbourhood
have returned to their respective homes, or whether they still remain in the Fort, If
the latter be the case I have to request you will inform me of the number of men
Women and Children which have taken shelter in the Port under your command
and what are the means by which they are subsisted.

2nd Are the men sufficiently supplied with
Arms and ammunition to enable them to defend themselves in case of an attack the
above information and such other intelligence as you may be able to commu=
=nicate relative to the situation of the Country will be thankfully received I
hope it may not be necessary to march more men to the frontier during
the summer but I wish to be particularly informed of your situation, that the
Executive may be prepared as far as practicable to give protection to the
frontier inhabitants
