At 4 Do[?] passed Montock [MONTAUK] Point. At 6 Do[?] the light [LIGHTHOUSE?] bore WNW Dist. [DISTANCE] 8 miles from which I take my departure. Wednesday Oct 22 1834 All of these 24 hours moderate breezes from the NW and clear Steering SE by E Hands employed in fitting boats and doing other necessary jobs of ships duty So ends Saw a Brig steering to the SW Longitude by Chronometer 67.04 west Latt [LATITUDE] 38..43 N

Thursday Oct 23thd 1834 Commences with moderate breezes from the NW and clear Stearing [STEERING] SE Middle & latter hours the wind hauling to the SW attended with squalls of wind & rain Took in the Top Gallant sails and double reefed the Top sails. At 5 Do [DITTO = P.M.] found us to [TOO] fast for him Gave up chaise [CHASE] and stood by the wind to the West. So ends this day.
