Melting fast. I payed papa 90¢ today & now I only owe 35¢ to him 10¢ to yatskey & 5¢ to punkin or 50¢ all together.

Apr. 7, 1917. U.S. declared war on Germany. Hurrah!

Apr. 8, 1917 Easter today I pumped the organ in church till i thought I would bust.

3 Hard boiled egs 1 red white & blue & 1 gold color & 1 plain.

Apr. 9, 1917 I went down & had another made I will tell you some other time, made. It goes a lot farther than the other.

Apr. 10, 1917 Yatskey & Bud nearly had a fight today

Apr. 11, 1917 most all of The kids came up today & we played ball. Billy O said to me, Now Ed I’ll speed em right over so hard that you cant see them & he put one right over the pan & I lammed it the duce of a way.

bad as Bud. thats sayen a good deal & Dony & Matthew those 3 kids outs don’t count merles & donys & Matthews. were standing Yatskey Kershaw bud & myself Our side beat 14 to 15 Peanut was on 3rd & there was 2 strikes & 2 down & I put 1 right over the pan & cooper dident strike at it & I aimed one at the plate but it was an in & it curved way out - of his reach & he swung at it. He is left-handed or Lefty.

Apr. 14, 1917 Will Roth my brother in law & I & Dony racked the lawn & put grass seed on & rolled it talk about hard labor. We only got 5 eggs today. We generally get 7 or 8 out of 11 hens. this Aft. the kids came up & played ball & cause kershaw got out on 1st & bud said he was safe & he woulde give it so he got mad & started to go home on his bike & he dident go just then & I asked him if he was going & he dident say anything & Peanut says We dont give a d–m whether you stay or not. Peanut dont swear much but he uses a lot of slang Well bud went & we hollered after him & said Good riddance & bad rubbish. After a while we played

21 & Bud came back & passed out some crackers & played ball again. I thought he would.

Apr. 1[5?], 1917 Sunday. The kids came up & we only played 21 I was up only 2 times I lam them awful hard & the kids miss them & get a lot in the hole so I have a long bat. I bought a quarter ball today but it went up to 35¢ in stead of 25¢. It is a lively Bounder & the inside is rubber I know because I have taken the inside out

Apr. 16, 1917 School today Cloudy Lots of news today, [illegible] Sages cat caught the craze of economizing because of the high cost of living. It came in the office cellar & When grandma went in another room for a minute the cat went in got up on the tabel took Grandmas canary bird out & scattered all of the birdseed around & left the feathers of the bird on the table & the floor carried off the bird. Sages said they were awful sory.” but not $5 worth The bird cost $5 bucks

shiner in a fist fight than I ever saw.

He is about 2 times as big as Charley Haynes & he started to bully him & Charley got him down & gave him a paist in the eye his black eye was so big that it coverd half of his cheek. He went in the schoolhouse balling It is the best fight I ever saw. about 2 or 3 years ago we used to have great fights but now nobody fights hardly.

Pops office is right next sages garage & Sages live above their Garage & My brother read lives with his wife Leona above our of office & Grandma lives with read & leona. I went to the show tonight It was Kermis all it was was some little kids marched around & danced & then some big girls

Apr. 17, 1917 In school yesterday Henny Hambone sat with me because he forgot to bring his book to class & I put my foot on the other desk & gave hambone a push & he went right off the seat & fell into the aisle with an awful thump I got peeled for doing it.

& Pecker. Pecker just moved in morrows house his name is Ronald garderner & he is left handed & [swaner?] like [time?] has got a $1.25 Base ball & is 9 years old.

Apr. 18, 1917 Looks like rain. Worked till half past five & then played Ball. I went out after supper two.

Apr. 19. 1917 This morning proff made a speech on the food problem in this country. He said We cannot realize the seriosness of the situation. He had about 25 blanks [but made?] sign [illegible] as to enlist in the government service. You leave school on May 1st &my get credit for all work. Proff said that some kids would think "Well I will start work on the farm 1 wk. before exams.” He said it wouldent go down. It seems that all of the batty & crazy people take after the Kiser. I think he ought to go in some bughouse & given good treatment All the nations seem to be declareing war against germany.

Worked till nearly 6 tonight & played ball after the other side beat 4 to 6
