Sunday, June 13, 1920

A good day. Jim staid at home all day. Ben went to Mount Airy to get ice. Did not get any. Come by Renan & brought Kate Harvey home with him. He had all the children with him. He then went to Strait Stone and got ice. Josie made cream for dinner. We had our first snaps and beets. We had fried chicken. Marvin and family was here a few minutes this evening. Reese Smith carried Aunt Kate home. Henry too. 9 oclock

Tuesday, June 15, 1920

A good day. There was a little rain this morning and this evening but not enough to do any good. The men folks worked on their tobacco. Josie got dinner. She had snaps and potatoes. I planted some butter beans and thined some corn. Josie and the children went to Marvins a few minutes. While she was gone two of the Doss children came and wanted to see Josie a bout cutting out some sewing.

A good day. Clouds a round but very little rain. We hope Franklin is improve. They had the Dr to see him last night. Ben and Jim plowed corn a while this morning then cut Jims wheat & finished Marvins wheat. I got most of the dinner. We had snaps & potatoes and beets and fried chicken. Jim plowed some in the garden this evening. The garden is lookin well now. 9 oclock

Saturday, June 26, 1920

A good day. Ben and Jim finished plowing their corn for this year. They plowed tobacco the [?] of the day. Josie washed a little and ironed some and baked a cake and bathed the children. I got breakfast and milked the cows. Brough the milk from the spring and churned, gathered some snaps, got some potatoes and [?] them and cooked them, dress 4 chickens. Went to Marvins and helped Carrie dress 4 chickens. They are fixin for a dinner at Strait Stone tomorrow. 9 oclock [Written upside down above the date: We hope that Franklin is getting on ok. Henry is complaining to night.]

A good day. Jim and Ben worked on the barn shelter. Ben & Josie went to Jim Thomsons and got pears to preserve. Nellie got some berries to make jellie. I made 16 glasses of jellie this evening and made three quarts of jam. Evylin has not come down stairs to day. Hope she will be a bout in the morning. I got some snaps from Marvin to day.

A rainy day. The boys pulled some leaves and got wet. Josie went to see the Owen baby. This morning Nellie made some preserves. I caned three cans of peaches and made some preserves. Evylin went to see Virginia this morning. Edna went to Marvins and got some butter and meal. We had snaps and corn and stewed & raw tomatoes, peaches and cream for dinner. I do hope it is going to clear up now. 8:30 oclock

A good day. It did not rain today here. It rained in sight. The men folks worked on their tobacco. Josie got dinner. She cooked snaps and butter beans. Reese carried me to Johnson Reynols to get some peaches. I got enough to put up two gallons. We had peaches and cream for dinner. Josie gathered some beans. I helped a little. I went to the sweet potato patch and got a few potatoes. I intend makein pies. 8:30 oclock

Tuesday, August 24, 1920

A good day. No rain. The men folks cut tobacco all day. Josie staid at the barn all day and kept up the fires. Nellie caned some tomatoes this morning and made preserves this evening and picked some beans. I got the dinner. Josie gathered the snaps and corn. This evening I gathered a few beans and got some muskmellon and tomatoes. Earl Bennett eat dinner with us today.

A good day. The men moved [?] a curing of tobacco & cut a cureing. They will stay with a barn tonight. Josie and I washed a big washing and got dinner. This evening we went to Marvins a little while. Josie & Carrie picked some snaps. Josie and I strung ours to night.

A good day. The men folks moved tobacco. Josie helped them all the evening. Josie got dinner. She cooked snaps and turnip salit. I went to see Mr Owens baby this morning. They called the Dr to see it. He is very sick. I went to see Sarah Emerson this evening. Henry & Hellen Brumfield went. Reese Smith carried us. He is a good driver. I eat supper with Carrie to night. Jim is at the barn tonight.

A good day. The men folks rehung two cureings of tobacco and moved them and hauled some sticks. Mabel has bin sick all day. They carried her to the Dr to night. I hope she may be better by morning. I got dinner and went to Marvins a few minutes. I gathered some snaps and dried beans and butter beans. Jim has gone to Marvins to night.

A cloudy day. No rain. They men cut a house of tobacco for Jim. Jim & Ben went to the barn. Ben & Josie went to carrie Mabel to the Dr this evening. She is mightily bad off some way. She cries nearly all the time she is awake. I am sorry for her and all the rest of us. I got dinner cooked. Peas and chicken. Had a dish of snaps. I have bin at home all day.

A good day. We had a lot of company to day. Rob Hubbard and family & Mrs. Car[,] Lizzie Bennett & Fabar Jefferson & family. Lee & Hildna come this evening. Carrie and three children come a little while. Josie and I got dinner. We cooked snaps and potatoes and chicken. Josie had baked a cake. Ben carried Rob & family home this evening. Paul & Earl Bennett come and carried Lizzie & Faber home tonight.

A good day we all staid at home except Henry. He went to Aunt Mags & Uncle Lees. I got the most of the dinner. We had snaps the first this season. We had fried chicken. I did hope that Carrie would come but she did not come. I hope none of them are sick. Jim Thomson & family come. I was glad to see them. A cloudy day most of the day. Rained a little. Jim & Ben plowed in the corn. Henry plowed some two. Mrs. Car churned & strung snaps for dinner. Mrs. Mamie Hutcherson sent the snaps. Denias folks was looking for Henry & his bride today. There has not bin any one to see Josie today. Josie has suffered a lot today, I am so sorry for her & can't do any thing to help her. I started a letter to Effie today. Hope she may get it soon. Mrs. Trent helped me get dinner & got supper. Had it about ready when I come home from milking.

A good day. Jim & Ben and Mr. Booker got up with hay all evening. Henry & Jim plowed until noon. Mrs. Dews sent us some apples today Mrs. Trent [ironed?] all the morning. I got dinner. Kate come this evening and brought Josie some light bread. Johnson & Mollie and Julie Fergerson come to see Josie this evening. Mrs. Mamie Hutchenson come and brought us some snaps. I am diapointed that Carrie did not come to see me this evening.

A good day. The men folks got up hay & mowed some. Mrs. Edmons send us a bucket of snaps ready to put in the pot and a bag of apples. Mrs. Hutchenseon sent some light bread. [D__?] Blair come to see us to day. Mrs. Booker come. to day [Lula? Mayhen?] & Elsie [Carter?] come and played with the children a while. The red cow have hurt her self so that she can't hardly get about. I want to see Carrie so bad. I cant hardly stay at home and cant go

A good day. We all staid at home. Mr. Trent & I got dinner. We cooked snaps & [potatos?] and beets friend chickens made apple dumplings Mrs. Anderson & Denia Blair come to see Josie. Miss Janie and Anna Hubbard and Rob & Ella and Mr. Sam all come to see Josie. Mrs. Lewis sent her some nice peaches. Miss Anna brought her a box of tomatoes & some light bread. Charley Harvey brought Carrie here a few minutes. I was so glad she come. I had thought of her all day.

A good day. The land is [two?] wet to work. Jim & Ben [?] tobacco most of the day. They helped Norman Booker fix a [top?] for his well this evening. A very hot day. A good day. The boys finished plowing corn & tobacco. Then commence to plowing peas. Josie got a letter from Effie Brumfield & Thelma & Marys pictures. Mrs Trent ironed all the morning. Mrs Car churned & strung the snaps for dinner. I got dinner. I set a round most of the evening. Mrs Trent sewd some. I wanted to go some where that I could fish but could not go. I miss Reese so much. Some of them here has me where they want me - work and stay at home.

A rainy morning clear this evening. Ben helped to raise a barn at Dick Woodings. Jim went to Reynols and got a big basket full of nice peaches. Mrs Trent and Mrs Car and I peeled them. We had peaches and cream dinner and supper and Mrs Car caned 13 quarts. I am so glad of them. Mrs Trent ironed to day. I hemed a table cloth. I got dinner cooked snaps and cymblings and fried two chickens. I went to the orchard this evening and got a few apples and a few peaches. I am glad of the fruit this time. Josie is suffering to night.

A good day rain tonight. Jim & Norman Booker walked around in the crop all the morning. Ben carried Ella Hubbard home. All the children went with him. Nellie and I got dinner. Louisa John & family come to see Josie this evening. The Boys got their first water mellons[sic] today. I peeled 4 pounds of pears today. Gathered some snaps for tomorrows dinner. Mrs Car come to the table to day. I am so glad she is better.

A good day. The boys worked on their tobacco all day. Nellie has bin very busy today. she got dinner & churned gathered some grapes to make jellie. I went to Miss Willie Woodings burial. There was a big crowd at the burial. I went with Mr Booer[sic] & family. It was kind of him to take me. Mrs Car has him up all day or nearly so. This evening I cut some grass in the garden and gathered a few snaps for dinner tomorrow. Hattie washed here today. The children and I got the clothes in tonight.

A good day. Jim & Henry worked in the tobacco. Ben went to [Renan?]. He was one of the judge[s] of the election. [Irvin? or John?] Harvey come for me & brought me home. The children went with me. I went to Kate Harveys & staid a little while. Jamie Gravely was there. Virginia & Jamie was fixing up their supper to take on a hay ride. They have a beautiful night for their ride. Nellie made some jellie & caned[sic] tomatoes this morning. Mrs Car strung the snaps & shelled butter beans & churned. I gathered tomatoes and corn. I cooked it all. We had two [water?] mellons.

A good day. The boys helped cut tobacco at Norman Bookers. Jim & Henry eat dinner at Bookers. Ben come home. This evening Pearl Wiggonton & and her mother & Virginia Harvey come to see Josie. Mrs Alice Carter come a few minutes. Mrs Booke[r] come. She brought some snaps. & peas. Kate brought snaps. I am glad of them. We have had two fine musk mellons today. Max Car come this evening. I am so near asleep that I cant write.

A good day. The men worked in their tobacco most of the day. Late this evening Ben went to Mr Dews for fruit. the children and I went with him. He got pears & apples and plums and some snaps. We come by the Store and got sugar. Nellie made some jellie & caned some tomatoes. I got most of the dinner. Mrs Car is here yet. Josie has not felt so good today. There has not bin any one to see her to day. I milked when I got back from Dews as it was about dark.

A good day until near night then a rain & wind and some hail. I hope not enough to damage any thing much. Ben & Henry cleared up a barn getting ready to cut tobacco. Ben has gone to Bookers barn now. Mrs Car bathed the children this evening. Mrs Dews sent me some snaps by Mr Nat Wooding. I am glad of them. I made one jar of preserves & one of pickle, and near a gallon of jellie made the damsons that Carrie brought all in jellie.

A good day. Ben & Jim & Henry suckered tobacco all day. Josie has not felt as well as usual today. Edna & Franklin went to the Store this morning for medicine. They went to Reynols this evening to see about getting Edna dresses fit. There was no one at home but Reubin & Floid[?]. I am intending to go to Gallilee to morrow if nothing happens to hinder, Jim & Ben has gone to Norman Bookers barn tonight. I got some snaps from our cornfield the first [....?]

A cloudy day and a little rain. We all staid at home all the morning. I got dinner. I cooked snaps & corn & chicken. Made apple dumplings and one damson pie. This evening Ben & the children and Mrs Car went to Mr Powers and to see Mrs Trent. She would not come with them home. I wanted her to come but dont think hard of her. I would not if I was in her position. Jim brought some fine water mellons to the house He cut two. They were very good. I made coffee & baked bread for supper. No one eat much.

A good day. Rain tonight. The men folks finished cutting a [c...ing?] of tobacco for Booker & commence to cut for Ben. Irvin Harvey & [Aulens?] Brumfield helped them cut. Norman & a little nero [negro?]helped them. They did not fill the barn. Carrie & her children come a while. I was glad to see them. I gathered some snaps for dinner tomorrow.
