Tuesday, June 15, 1920

A good day. There was a little rain this morning and this evening but not enough to do any good. The men folks worked on their tobacco. Josie got dinner. She had snaps and potatoes. I planted some butter beans and thined some corn. Josie and the children went to Marvins a few minutes. While she was gone two of the Doss children came and wanted to see Josie a bout cutting out some sewing.

Friday, June 18, 1920

A good day. Jim and Ben thined corn until twelve oclock. Jim went to Chatham this evening. Ben carried him to Gretna. I went with them. Lees folks was workin in their tobacco. Grace gave me some cabbage. I am glad of them. Josie washed. We come by Kates from Gretna. Mrs Owen was there and Christenia Reynolds. Charles and a work man was at work on the house.

Sunday, June 20, 1920

A rainy day. Just what we needed. Jim come from Chatham this morning. Bruce Reynolds brought him. We all have staid at home all day. Josie and I got dinner. We fried chicken and had peas and potatoes and corn starch pudding. There has bin very little passin here today. Mr Mayhew & some of his family on thier truck is all that passed that I saw. 8 30 oclock

A good day. The men thined corn and then cut wheat. Franklin has bin very sick all day. I do hope he will be better by morning. Two of the Hubbard girls washed for Josie today. I got dinner. Reese carried me to White Falls. The river was so muddy that we could no fish and catch any thing. We come by Mount Airy and bough a few things. 9 oclock

A rainy morning. Clear tonight. Jim & Ben plowed some in the corn until the land got two wet. They cut wheat this evening, finished Owens and cut some on Jims. Charles & Jack Harvey come down here a little while this evening. Jack was going to Richmon tonight. At least start tonight. Franklin is sick but we hope he will getting better. I got dinner and ironed some. 9 oclock

A good day. Clouds a round but very little rain. We hope Franklin is improve. They had the Dr to see him last night. Ben and Jim plowed corn a while this morning then cut Jims wheat & finished Marvins wheat. I got most of the dinner. We had snaps & potatoes and beets and fried chicken. Jim plowed some in the garden this evening. The garden is lookin well now. 9 oclock

A good day. The boys plowed in the corn all day. Josie and I got dinner. Franklin is improving we think. I went to see Mollie Reynolds this evening. Mollie & Betty Haley was ironing. Carrie baked a cake this evening. Josie ironed and baked a cake and was feeling badly when I got home. Heard today that Howard Fontine was married. 9 10 oclock

A good day. Ben and Jim finished plowing their corn for this year. They plowed tobacco the [?] of the day. Josie washed a little and ironed some and baked a cake and bathed the children. I got breakfast and milked the cows. Brough the milk from the spring and churned, gathered some snaps, got some potatoes and [?] them and cooked them, dress 4 chickens. Went to Marvins and helped Carrie dress 4 chickens. They are fixin for a dinner at Strait Stone tomorrow. 9 oclock [Written upside down above the date: We hope that Franklin is getting on ok. Henry is complaining to night.]

A good day. Rain last night. Ben & Jim toped tobacco this evening. Ben helped rais a shed to Doss s [?] barn. Josie got dinner. She fried chicken. Had corn & butter beans. The first mess this year. I gathered some berries. Nellie gathered berries. We caned some & preserved some. I went to Carries a while. Evylin & Virginia is here tonight. Charles brought them here. They are in the parlor playing on the piano. 9 oclock

A good day and very warm. To night we have a hard rain. Jim & Ben topped tobacco nearly all day. Late this evening Ben & Josie and three children went to Jim Powers. Said they would come home tonight but they wont on acount of rain. Josie washed some this morning & got dinner. Corn, butter beans, potato, baked pies. Marvin let Rees take me to White Falls. I caught 34 fish. I eat dinner at Carries. Eva is sick.

Monday, August 2, 1920

A good day. Ben worked on his car the most of the day. Jim fired tobacco all day. Josie got dinner. I got the breakfast and milked the cows and churned. I cut cucumber and put them in brine. I gathered some butter beans and corn for dinner. This evening I went to Union Grove to preaching. Reese carried his mother and I. When I come home I milked the cows and eat supper and went to Marvins. He carried me and Carrie to Mr Allens to preaching.

A rainy day. The boys pulled some leaves and got wet. Josie went to see the Owen baby. This morning Nellie made some preserves. I caned three cans of peaches and made some preserves. Evylin went to see Virginia this morning. Edna went to Marvins and got some butter and meal. We had snaps and corn and stewed & raw tomatoes, peaches and cream for dinner. I do hope it is going to clear up now. 8:30 oclock

A cloudy bad day. The boys suckered tobacco most of the day. Nellie caned some tomatoes. Josie helped her some. Josie got dinner. This evening Nellie and Josie picked beans. I helped some. Ben yoked the spotted heifer. She kept getting in the corn. I went to Carries a few minutes this evening. Kate & Virginia was there. I am suffering with my leg tonight.

A good day. No rain. The men folks cut tobacco all day. Josie staid at the barn all day and kept up the fires. Nellie caned some tomatoes this morning and made preserves this evening and picked some beans. I got the dinner. Josie gathered the snaps and corn. This evening I gathered a few beans and got some muskmellon and tomatoes. Earl Bennett eat dinner with us today.

Driscoll Hotel [written in a different ink from the rest of the entry] A good day. The men folks moved and cut tobacco. Ben finished cutting Bens tobacco his crop. Josie caned nine cans of tomatoes & corn. Carrie & the three little children come here a little while this evening. West Wooding run his car over Bens dog. She dont eppear to be much hurt. They will stay with tobacco to night.

A good day. Jim and Ben commence to cut corn. I went to White Falls. Reese Smith carried me & Henry on the machine. I did not catch many fish. Josie got dinner. Bettie Haley come and ironed for Josie this evening. Carrie Smith come down and got a few aples. Ben & Henry & Reese has gone hunting to night.

A good day. Ben & Jim cut corn in the morning. This evening Jim mowed peas. Ben went with Josie and I to Long Island. Josie bought two doz quart fruit jars this morning. Josie went to Carries for some patterns this evening. I stoped there. Carrie was canning apples. I helped peel some apples. Come home and cut grass for the cows and milked. Edna is at Mr Woodings to night.

A good day. Ben & Jim cut corn most of the day. Josie caned tomatoes this morning and gathered some this evening and done a lot of things besides. I shelled a few beans. The children is well placed with the school.

A good day. Rain tonight. Jim & Ben cut corn this morning. This evening they raked hay and shocked it. Josie sowed a little. I commenced dinner. Josie finished it. I dug a basket of potatoes and picked a few beans. This evening I went to George Blairs. The girls was busy as could be. Denia was at Ren Worshams. I would of bin glad to see her but I thought it might rain. Jim found 8 little frogs. [?]

Oct first day

A good day. Ben & Jim cut corn all day. Josie and I got dinner. While we were eating dinner Charley Harvey & Lee Brumfield come. Josie and I registered and paid taxes. Josie made Edna a dress. I picked some peas and went to Marvins. To day is Mabels birthday.

Ben and Jim cut corn until dinner this evening. Ben carried Edna and I [to] White Falls to fish. This morning I washed a little. Josie got dinner. There was a lawn party at Strait Stone this evening. Marvin and the little boys went. The cream was very nice. Ben & Henry has gone hunting.

4 day cutting

A good day. Jim and Ben finished cutting corn and shockin it. This evening Ben went to Gretna. I went with him to White Falls. Caught 19 fish. We were at Mount Airy at dark. Got home OK and Ben has gone hunting. Josie got dinner. I picked some peas. Bettie Haley washed here today. Josie went to Marvins this evening. Owen solde tobacco in Boston to day.

Tuesday, November 30, 1920

A very rainy day. Ben worked on his car this morning. Helped Marvin tie tobacco a while this evening. We are out of wood. Have not got any corn shucked. Jim come home from South Boston just as wet as could be. John Hutcherson got in the creek with his truck and hiered Edward to pull him out. I am sorry for Jim and cant help him and he would not let me if I could.

Rain last night. Rain and hail a gain to day. Ben and Jim shucked some corn this morning. This evening Ben carried Jim and Nellie and Vinia to Gretna on their way home to Chatham. I went with them to Gretna. I bought several little things. We left them at Gretna. It rained and hailed all the way home but we made it ok. Josie had made a fire when we got back. She was going to get supper. Henry went to school. He was so colde that he cried.

A clear cold day. Jim got some wood. Owen hoed [?] some corn. Ben & Jim [?] out some feed. Ben went to Chatham and I went with him. He carried some meat & beans for Nellie. We did not see Evylin. She and some girls had gone for hollie to decorate with. I had a good letter from Denia yesterday. She was at Earnest Craddocks. Lottie has a new boy baby. Today is Hazel Smiths birth day. I did not go in a store at Chatham. We stoped at Gretna a few minutes. Josie got dinner and supper. She had supper a bout ready when we got home. The roads is awful in some places from Gretna to Chatham. Henry went to Strait Stone and Mount Airy to day.

Monday, December 20, 1920

A very good day. Ben & Jim shucked corn and hauled feed all day. I got dinner & ironed a little and churned. Fixed up the butter. Josie went to Carries. They made Franklin a suit I think is beautiful for them to make. Ben carried Josie and went after her. Henry went to school. He got his wheel a gain. Mr Field did not teach to day. The patrons met to night to decide a bout his teaching after xmas. Beatris Owen was here a while this evening. The baby done fine for her while Josie was gone.

A good day. Ben & Jim shucked corn. This morning Ben & Josie went to Mount Airy. They got home at twelve. Jim & Ben and Marvin & William cut feed all the evening for Ben & Marvin. I ironed some & got dinner. Late in the day I went to Marvins. Carrie was baking her fruit cake. It looked good. Henry went to school. Edna has a very bad colde. The baby cried most of the evening. I spilt my ink.

A cloudy day. No rain yet. Jim and Ben shucked some corn and fed the cows the stalks. Then hauled some wood. Josie made some bats for her quilt. I [ put up?] some hens. Expect to kill them tomorrow. This evening I went to Johnson Reynolds. Found them well. [Johnson] was stripping tobacco. The children here are better of their sore mouths. I do hope that they very soon be well. I am so sorry for them all that are sick. I want to hear from Carrie & [family] so bad.

A cloudy day. Ben was in Danville. Solde the last tobacco that they had. Did not get much for it. Ben got home OK a little after dark. Jim shucked some corn and fed the stalks to the cows. Marvin come and eat dinner with us. I was so glad to see him. Josie ironed some this morning and Nell ironed some this evening. Henry is reading. He sleeps in my room now that Nellie is home. Anna Callans (col)[coloured] come here and wanted to rent a house. I am sorry for her but dont want her here.

A good day. Jim & Ben shucked some corn this morning & fed the stalks to the cows then worked on the garden. Josie cut a nice mees of turnip salit. I got dinner. Mrs Car was up today. Mollie Reynols was here today a little while. She helped us quilt some. We finished the quilt tonight. That is three that we have quilted this week. Irvin Harvey is here tonight he brought us some salit. We are mighty glad to get it. Nine oclock and bed time I think.
