Tuesday, June 11, 1918

A clear day we need rain so bad.

Ben worked tobacco half of the day then cut wheat for Marvin this evening.

Josie got dinner. I churned and then worked the sweet potatoes and pea nuts

This evening I got up some of the onions.

Josie sewed all the evening. Carrie got Hazels pictures to day. She is not pleased with them. I am anxious to see them.

A good day. Ben and Paul plowed tobacco this morning. Ben plowed the sweet potatoes. This evening Ben mowed. Josie got dinner. I churned and worked some in the garden. Josie tried to find some black berries found enough for supper with cream.

Heard today that Posies baby is sick hope she may get well.

Mr Owen has bin sick to day. Hope he may be able to work by in the morning.

Saturday, October 19, 1918

A good day cool and windy. Ben went to Chatham this morning. Come home and hauled a load of wood.

Mr Owen went to the mill at White Falls did not get his grinding.

Posie Johnson has bin sick heard this evening that Posie Reynolds is sick.

Paul Josie and I stripped tobacco most of the day.

I finished digging the sweet potatoes and Paul hauled them home on the wheel barrow. Chesley Edmons come by here this evening to tell us good by he has got to go to training camp Monday.

A good day. The men worked tobacco this morning. Jim worked in the garden this evening and planted sweet potatoes. I went to Reynols's and got some slips. Josie went to John Hutchersons twise to day after meal. She got some this evening.

Josie made some pickle this morning and washed up her floor this evening.

Henry worked all day in the tobacco. Edna & Franklin was at Carries all the evening. I have not seen Paul Bennett yet. I begin to want to see him.

A good day. Jim & Ben sowed some peas. Ben went to Lee B after them and carried all the children. Henry carried two doz eggs. He bought match and fly powder & chewing gum.

Henry done his first plowing to day. Dr Bennett and Henry Bennett come to see Jim & Ben today.

Josie ironed this morning. I got dinner. This evening I ironed some & then went to the sweet potatoe patch. They are lookin well. I come through Jims tobacco ground. The tobacco is growing some.

A good day. Ben & Jim moved some tobacco.

Josie got dinner. She baked pies. Evylin & Edna and I went to Worshams pond. Josie fixed our dinner. We went on a buggy and drove Jake, Bens horse. Nellie caned some tomatoes. Denia & Kate come to see us this evening.

I am sorry that I was not at home.

Nellie dug some sweet potatoes.

Cloudy but no rain to speak of. We need rain.

Jim staid at the barn all day and is there yet.

Ben & Owen and the boys cut tobacco. They finished Owens and Jims. They are at the barn now stringing leaves.

Josie got dinner.

This evening I went and got some sweet potatoes and washed them.

I went to Marvins a little while late this evening. Carrie was makeing Roy a blouse. I brought it home with me and have finished the button holes & sewed on the buttons. Marvin had finished tieing Hatties tobacco & commenced on Paul Bennetts.

A good day. Ben & Edna & Josie and Franklin went with Mrs. Car home at Mr Powers. Henry went with Uncle Marvin to Sunday school at Strait Stone church. He come home and we eat our dinner. Then Henry went to Marvins. Reese & Paul Smith and Henry Brumfield went to Mag Brumfields.

I went to the sweet potatoe patch and dug a basket full of sweet potatoes & washed them this evening. I churned and gathered some snaps & strung them.

I went to Marvins a while this evening. Willie Mayhew was here this morning to look at Bens tobacco.

Cloudy most of the day and some rain.

Jim & Ben stripped tobacco the most of the day.

Mr. Owen went to the island for guano. William Gilbert (col) went for Kate Harveys guano with Marvin Smiths team.

Jim B is helpin Henry with his lessons. Ben has gone possum hunting.

Josie made Edna some under pants to day.

I went this evening and got some sweet potatoes and washed them ready to cook. I ironed some this morning. Josie got most of the dinner.

Ben found Mr. Owens cow with a little calf to day.

Sunday December 4, 1921

A rainy day. We all staid at home until after dinner. I went to Marvins late this evening. Marvin is thinking of killing hogs in the morning. Mabel is not well yet. Hope she will be well soon. I got dinner except make a potatoe salid. Josie made that. It was fine. I and Josie have read some today in book that we borrowed.

Wednesday December 14, 1921

A windy day. Very disagreeable. Ben and Ben hauled some leaves and put in the stable. Alcie Callands washed here today. The clothes most blowed a way. I got them this evening. I have staid at home all day to day. We had turnip salid for dinner and sweet potatoes. Tonight there is two men here say they are Mormon preachers. We dreaded them but they are very pleasant. The children went to school. Josie commenced to change her dress this evening. I comenced to make some sheets. Tonight I have read. Did not try to work any. It is now nearly ten oclock and I must go bed. Oh how I miss Carrie.

A good day. Ben went to Mag Brumfields to a cutting match. Jim cleared up the garden nearest [?] the potatoes. Henry went to Mags this evening & to Lees. I went to Johnson Reynolds this evening. Found them all well. Josie baked some pies this evening. Charles Harvey come & brought a sack of ship stuff home. Jim & Ben has gone to Strait Stone tonight.

A good day. The land is so wet that they cant plow. Ben worked on a closet for Owen. Jim went to Clide Reynolds with potatoes that he had solde to Clide. Josie got dinner. I picked over some onions. Carrie & the children come a while this evening. Josie & Carrie cut some salit for dinner tomorrow. Ben & Marvin went to Strait Stone this evening to see Thomson a bout the road. Ben never got back until after 9 oclock.

Cloudy most of the day. Rain tonight. Ben & Jim planted potatoes this morning. This evening Ben went to Cedar Forest for some corn that Mrs Car gave him. Jim worked at home. Tonight Jim went to Marvins. Josie washed a big washing. Kate come a few minutes. She wanted some eggs to set. Josie and all the kids and I went to Carries a little while. Henry & Edna went to school. The surveyer was on his job today.

A good day. Cloudy tonight. All of us stayed at home all day except Ben. He carried Mr Feris and an other man over to [?]. Hugh & Aubra Brumfield come and staid with Henry today. Marvin and family was here this evening. Kate & Charley Harvey was here a little while this evening. Josie and [I] got dinner. We cooked the last sweet potatoes that we had.

A good day. Jim & Ben and Henry worked tobacco and planted potato slips. Ben has gone to Strait Stone tonight to the Lodge. Josie ironed all the morning. Bathed and dressed the children. I got breakfast and milked the cows fed the chickens then I went to Mr Mayhews and Mr Edmons s for potatoe slips. Got a few at both places. Beatrice and Dewie come down here this evening. They said that the baby was sick.

A good day. There was a little rain this morning and this evening but not enough to do any good. The men folks worked on their tobacco. Josie got dinner. She had snaps and potatoes. I planted some butter beans and thined some corn. Josie and the children went to Marvins a few minutes. While she was gone two of the Doss children came and wanted to see Josie a bout cutting out some sewing.

A rainy day. Just what we needed. Jim come from Chatham this morning. Bruce Reynolds brought him. We all have staid at home all day. Josie and I got dinner. We fried chicken and had peas and potatoes and corn starch pudding. There has bin very little passin here today. Mr Mayhew & some of his family on thier truck is all that passed that I saw. 8 30 oclock

A good day. Clouds a round but very little rain. We hope Franklin is improve. They had the Dr to see him last night. Ben and Jim plowed corn a while this morning then cut Jims wheat & finished Marvins wheat. I got most of the dinner. We had snaps & potatoes and beets and fried chicken. Jim plowed some in the garden this evening. The garden is lookin well now. 9 oclock

A good day. Ben and Jim finished plowing their corn for this year. They plowed tobacco the [?] of the day. Josie washed a little and ironed some and baked a cake and bathed the children. I got breakfast and milked the cows. Brough the milk from the spring and churned, gathered some snaps, got some potatoes and [?] them and cooked them, dress 4 chickens. Went to Marvins and helped Carrie dress 4 chickens. They are fixin for a dinner at Strait Stone tomorrow. 9 oclock [Written upside down above the date: We hope that Franklin is getting on ok. Henry is complaining to night.]

A good day. It did not rain today here. It rained in sight. The men folks worked on their tobacco. Josie got dinner. She cooked snaps and butter beans. Reese carried me to Johnson Reynols to get some peaches. I got enough to put up two gallons. We had peaches and cream for dinner. Josie gathered some beans. I helped a little. I went to the sweet potato patch and got a few potatoes. I intend makein pies. 8:30 oclock

A good day. We had a lot of company to day. Rob Hubbard and family & Mrs. Car[,] Lizzie Bennett & Fabar Jefferson & family. Lee & Hildna come this evening. Carrie and three children come a little while. Josie and I got dinner. We cooked snaps and potatoes and chicken. Josie had baked a cake. Ben carried Rob & family home this evening. Paul & Earl Bennett come and carried Lizzie & Faber home tonight.

A good day. Rain tonight. Jim & Ben cut corn this morning. This evening they raked hay and shocked it. Josie sowed a little. I commenced dinner. Josie finished it. I dug a basket of potatoes and picked a few beans. This evening I went to George Blairs. The girls was busy as could be. Denia was at Ren Worshams. I would of bin glad to see her but I thought it might rain. Jim found 8 little frogs. [?]

6 day Jim gathered apples and made some cider. Ben went to Long Island for guano. He bought shoes and put them on the horses him self. He was gone most of the day. Josie got dinner. I picked peas this morning. This evening I washed a little. Put out the things that Betty left in the tubs. I went and dug a basket of sweet potatoes.

7th day Ben and Jim covered the hog pen and dug the sweet potatoes. Ben got up the pumpkins. Josie ironed and helped get dinner. We cooked beans and pumpkin for dinner. Josie made Franklin a union suit. I went to Marvins. Kate Harvey was there. Hazel is not well. They carried her to see the Dr this evening.

8th A good day. Jim went to the mill at Galveston. Ben picked up the sweet potatoes and put them in sacks. Josie got dinner. This evening Ben carried Josie and the baby and Franklin and I to Cedar Forest. I fished in the Creek. The rest of them went to Jim Powers. Hazel has been sick all day. Ben & Henry gone hunting.

12th A good day. Jim plowed all day. Ben went to Gretna with primeings[?] Franklin went with him. Roy Smith went to school to day for his first time. Josie has bin sick all day. I got dinner. I baked a potatoe. Pumpkins the first this fall. Grace Brumfield and went to Cedar Forest fishing. Did not have any luck.

A good day. The land is as wet as it can be. Jim and Ben cut wood in the woods to day. The Owens stopped ]?] tobacco mans in [?] stripped tobacco. I got breakfast and milked & churned and got dinner. I cooked beans and potatoes. This evening I went to Marvins a while. Carrie was sewing for the little girls. Mrs Car and Josie shelled a lot of beans. Henry went to school. Henry got a letter from Evylin this evening. 9:30 oclock

A good day. Ben hauled some wood. Jim helped. Marvin striped tobacco all day and Ben & Jim went up there tonight to tie tobacco. Henry went to school. Some of the boys from school went to Gretna to play basket ball. Bettie Haley washed here today. Josie & Mrs Car finished shelling the white beans today. I ironed some and got dinner as usual. Cooked beans and potatoes.
